106840 2002-12-17 07:50:00 I asked this question last night but I'm still trying to get to the bottom of it.

I've installed IE 6 and can't use my Xtra account. I've been told that IE6 doesn't support pop3 mail accounts (such as xtra) and I have to change to a web based system. Is this right?

Thanks JR

106841 2002-12-17 07:53:00 IE6 will not prevent you using OE for email.
You should have continued the old thread, as people will not be aware of your problem and the options given.

I assume your issue is still that you cannot access Xtra POP3 mail from OE?

The errors you were getting suggested an incorrect password or log-in?

106842 2002-12-17 08:00:00 The eror message is, "The host 'pop3.xtra.co.nz' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'pop3.xtra.co.nz', Server: 'pop3.xtra.co.nz', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D"

I've rung Xtra help and confirmed my email settings are correct.
They (Xtra) had no other ideas.

106843 2002-12-17 08:01:00 IE will deal with webbased mail, an email client such as lotusnotes, eudoramail or Outlook (express) deals with pop3 mail, it pulls it of the server and stores it in your machine for you...

IE makes no differance there is no need to fix the pot when its the jug that is leaking

You don't use IE6 for your emails, you use Outlook Express which usually is installed with IE.

Oh I see, I've just read your post from last night -- like godfather says, you need to keep your posts together in one thread because people are just going to waste time repeating everything that other people have already said.

I'm also picking that your username and/or password has been incorrectly entered -- it's very easy to do. Check that for a start.

Did you do as I suggested and delete your account then added it again?

Please post back with the results of these suggestions in this thread and hopefully one of our internet/email gurus will be around to offer more suggestions if you have no success.

106845 2002-12-17 08:21:00 Sorry about the disjointedness. Yes I completely re-entered the Email account details. The account names and password is correct.

106846 2002-12-17 09:22:00 Hmm, well this is a really tricky one, beyond my experience unfortunately. :-(

Hang in there though, because we do have some people that know quite a lot about this sort of thing. Hopefully they will be along to have a crack at it themselves.

106847 2002-12-17 09:53:00 disable any email antivirus and try ie repair.

a quick fix is to simply install another email client like eudora.

106848 2002-12-17 11:03:00 You have re-entered the the account details but you have not by the sound of it removed the mail account and created a new one as Susan said to do on another post.
Mail accounts get corrupted and can stop working, setting up a completely new one can fix the problem

With Outlook Express open select Tools/Accounts
Click on the Mail Tab
With the Xtra account hilighted click on remove and then click Yes

Click on Add/Mail (top right)
Name: type in the name you want to appear in front of the email address when
you send an email eg John Smith
Click next
Email address: type in your email address eg johnsmith@xtra.co.nz
Click next
Incoming mail server: pop3.xtra.co.nz
Outgoing mail server: smtp.xtra.co.nz
Click next
Account name: should be there already (this is the first part of your email address before the @)
Passsword: type your password
Click next and finish.
Close the accounts page and close OE

Connect from the shortcut on your desktop.
If you do not have a shortcut create one.
Double click on My Computer and double click on Dialup networking
Right click on the Xtra icon and select create shortcut.
Click yes

Open the shortcut on the desktop and connect from this, when it indicates the connection to Xtra has been completed, open Outlook Express and click on Send/Receive.
