| 106764 | 2002-12-17 02:23:00 | My HP 880C Deskjet works fine on my Penium II 350 Win 98 system when plugged into the system USB port, but will not work when installed via a USB hub. I need the port for a digital camera (Nikon) that the manufacturer says must not be connected via a hub. Any suggestions welcome |

(If its powered, it will have its own power supply, usually a plug-pack plugged into 230v) Many hubs are bus-powered (they draw their power from the PC) and in these cases severely limit the power available for USB devices. Its probable your camera needs higer power, therefore a hub is not recommended. Perhaps your printer has the same limitations? |

This could be as a result of a bad or incompatible USB hub, or your machine might not recognize the USB hub . Does the hub show up OK in device manager? Do you need to load any specific drivers? What are the symptoms of the printer not working? Error messages? Are you running Windows 98, or is it 98 SE? All updates to Windows applied? |

| 106768 | 2002-12-17 04:58:00 | The hub shows in the device manager as per installation instructions. Running Win 98 Second Edition The printer will not work. Message is that it is not connected. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling through hub but am then advised that it is a duplicat4e installation. Thanks |

| 106769 | 2002-12-17 05:14:00 | My Sony CyberShot Digital Camera's manual says that it might not work properly when connected on a USB Hub, but it works just perfectly. Even if I plug in my USB scanner and the camera in the same hub and turn both the power on, I can download and upload images from/to the camera. I suggest you try plugging the digital camera in the USB hub, turn it on and see what happens. Another suggestion is to go out and buy a non-USB connection printer but that might not suit you if you reciently bought the printer. |

| 106771 | 2002-12-17 06:05:00 | One article on HP site simply suggests that if printers will not work via a hub, then connect them direct to the Root Hub. No reasoning given, and as mentioned above I suspect its to do with enumeration, and that some hubs behave differently to others. If it has parallel port ability then that would fix it. |

My solution won't work if the person alredy has another printer connected via the parallel port though. :-( |
