106735 2002-12-17 01:50:00 hey all,
what do you think, is winXP SP-1 worth the download?

i don't have any problems with winXP currently.

please don't quote what you've read or heard - i want knowledge gained from experience.

so, what gains have you had from winXP SP-1??

thanks
dan

yes it's worth getting, but you shouldn't need to download it. It is available on several internation magazines now.

My system seems to be running more smoothly now - certainly no trouble caused by the installation. And of course several dozen security holes plugged etc.

BTW Dan, how'd the refitting of the CPU go?

106737 2002-12-17 02:07:00 oh, haven't done that yet - too busy.

got holidays next week so i'll do it then.

tell me - how hot can you expect a P4 2.4Ghz to get running games in a room of 16 degrees and a case temp of 32???
(standard intel heatsink/fan combo, not overclocked)

i had a celeron before you see and they run very cool.

currently it gets to 47 (artic silver 3 should drop that a couple degrees i guess...) - ok now, but what about the summer here when its 36 degrees in my apartment ALL THE TIME??

support.microsoft.com

I've had no problems with it installed, then again I had no problems without it installed.

thanks for the link though.

47 is safe, but a bit higher than I would expect. 32 is a bit high at 16 abobve ambient temp. I'd suggest adding a case fan to get the air flow up a bit.

106742 2002-12-17 03:04:00 add to crozier- the case temp is way to hot (assuming the temp sensors are accurate). sounds like something wrong with the case airflow. fix that and your cpu temp should come down a lot. with 16 room temp, case temp should be around 20-25 roughly.

to give some idea my pc is 33 case temp with 27 room temp at the mo, without front case fans. with front case fans it should drop to about 30 or so.

My P4 2.4Ghz gets up to 50 deg on load. No oc on a stock fan... wasn't too happy with that, so have fitted a Volcano 7+ to it and now it doesn't get up that high at all... only 45 deg on med setting, and have an extra 2 case fans for inflow and 2 for outflow. Bit noisy but oh so stable! ;)

Don't worry about the 50deg... if it gets above 55 - 60, that's getting dangerous.

50 in a room that's just 16 is very high! If you're saying it's dangerous at 55 (just 5 higher) then it's too close. As has already been said, increase the air flow which should bring the case temp down quite dramatically and thereby reduce the cpu temp. I have an Athlon XP 200+ which is supposed to run a lot hotter than a P4 but it only gets to 50 with a very heavy load (3D games)
