106620 2002-12-16 18:04:00 What would I do..............

Back up to a CD, we use CDRW as we backup every week.

Backup your address book for a start. It will backup as a *.wab file but I would also be inclined to copy/paste all the contacts into a stand alone folder as well as insurance in case the wab file won't restore.

Backup all your favourites from IE or which ever Web Viewer you use.

Backup all your various programs that you have downloaded.

Backup any music and video files you have downloaded or created, as these take up room you might need a separate CD.

Then of course all your documents, save any emails you need as well, all your saved attachments, other files such as excel or what ever that you have created.

In short, if you want to keep it, back it up. If unsure back that up as well, you cannot go back in time and repeat the steps after you have reformatted.

If you were using something like Nortons Ghost that would back up your Hard Drive anyway by making a image of it but if you are having problems and looking at reformatting to cure those problems then ghosting could just as likely transfer all those problems over.

106621 2002-12-16 18:29:00 People have recently been having problems restoring their Address Books so in addition to what Ducky has told you I would take the safeguard of exporting the address book as a CSV file as well as saving the * . wab file .

To save the * . wab do a search on your hard drive for * . wab and you should get a file with yourname-or-whatever . wab . DO NOT get the wab . exe file as that is the program not your contacts .

Backup your address book to either a floppy disk or a CD (or both, just to be sure!) .

Not sure if Ducky had it in his list but don't forget the downloaded program installation files and drivers that you want to keep . Also your emails - either export them like the Address Book or search for and save the * . dbx files, though the latter is a bit of chore to restore if you have lots of folders in OE like I have .

Also don't forget your ICQ settings/contacts and your dial-up details (phone number, pop3 settings, etc) .

106623 2002-12-16 21:10:00 Isnt this covered in a FAQ?

Also, Make sure that you backup any program settings, some accounting software does backups (MKost actually), printer drivers, and other drivers, and check and make sure you note down your Dial-Up Networking Settings (To your ISP) just in case something goes wrong!

Cheers
