106889 2002-12-18 01:27:00 Hi everyone

I've just reinstalled the mobo, the heatsink, the CPU fan, the HD and the re-apply the thermal cream :_| . Everything is still the same, I'm still getting these small shocks near the power pack.

The tech guy well, all I know is that he works down there everyday at the shop/store and does alot of these stuff. I don't who setup the Duron 1.3 system, though.

And Crozier thank you for the offer but I live up in Auckland :( .

Well, I've decided to take the computer to this shop, that I could trust(I brought a computer from there 2 years ago and still now, I had no problems not a single one :) ) . If they can't fix it, then...

Thank you all for your help and time :) . I'll post back what actually was wrong, if I ever find that out :) .

106890 2002-12-18 01:51:00 You dont say what sort/kind of electrical shocks, whether they are static, or 50Hz tingle as you can get if the earth connection has come adrift and the case is floating indeterminedly above ground.

If you have a neon screwdriver touch the metal-work with it and see if it faintly lights up, but in any case first of all check that your IEE mains lead to the computer has earth continuity.

106891 2002-12-18 02:54:00 A lack of insulating washers under the mother board would not cause "shocks" (except to the wallet). It would cause expensive smoke.:_|

Since most cases have either thick paint or are plastic, the only place where you could get sparks or shocks is near the power supply : that's the only accessible bare metal. It should be earthed bare metal. :D If it's earthed, you are discharging your static charge, if it's not earthed, it's probably still static, but I'd want to check it out anyway.

106892 2002-12-18 04:14:00 I'll try earthing it but it did not work. Another problem is I can also feel the eletricity running on top of my case cover :( . Like you said Graham, "the only place where you could get sparks or shocks is near the power supply" my case cover is covered with one of those paints but why am I getting it around the whole case, except the front of the computer.

Well, thank you for your time :)

106893 2002-12-18 04:39:00 Getting shocks from the metalwork (and paint is also microscopically porous) is not normal.

It suggests no earth via the power lead, or worse, no earth on the power socket or the entire installation. Capacitive effects can give nasty voltages but if there is no earth, a minor fault could liven the case to 230v AC and not blow a fuse, just take a life instead

Assuming you are on an insulated floor, the voltage could actually be quite high. Get the whole thing checked out ASAP.

And yes, I am qualified to make that comment.....

>the washers that come with the case havent been used thereby creating a short between the mobo and the case itself

err...a lot of cases do not come with the washers and it dosn't matter if they do or don't(much). all the mobo mount points are earths so it dosn't matter if they connect to the spacers or case. main thing is to make sure that the mobo is sitting on an unneeded/incorrectly postioned spacer (which will scratch and short the mobo out).

the whole idea of the washers is to isolated the spaces exept for one. that non isolated one is the earth for the mobo. having only one earth helps with reduceing earth loops in the mobo.

leaving out the washers will not kill a mobo.

opps sorry typo it should be "main thing is to make sure that the mobo is NOT sitting on an unneeded/incorrectly postioned spacer"

106896 2002-12-18 08:38:00 I endorse God's comments here . Static will just give you a quick zap so any other kind of constant tingle is potentially a fatal shock waiting to happen .

Don't muck around with neon screwdrivers or amateur diagnostics, get the whole unit checked in place in your home by a licensed electrical worker . Just taking the box to the computer shop is not enough as the average computer tech has no formal electrical knowledge at all .

The problem could be a missing earth on the power point or even on your home's electrical switchboard and that can be a very dangerous situation indeed . I recommend that you call an electrician .

It is better to find out it is nothing after all than to be found dead .

Cheers

106897 2002-12-18 08:42:00 Sorry ConCon, I should have qualified that advice.

I have been a licensed electrical worker for over 30 years and I have seen my fair share of potentially lethal situations that could have killed.

Sadly I have also seen a few that did kill so please turn your computer off, unplug it and get it checked pronto, just in case.

Legally there must be someone there with qualifications.
