106879 2002-12-17 09:39:00 Hello People

I'll just like to ask, is it normal to get small electric shocks from the case, especially the parts near the power pack. Cause ever since I upgraded my motherboard from a MS-6378 to a ASRock-K7VM2 I been getting nothing but small electric shocks near the power pack and also from some parts from the case cover. I ask the guy who installed the motherboard and he said it's normal to get small shocks from places that are near the power pack and maybe sometimes around the case, but really...is it? I mean I had my old computer for almost 3 years now and never once have I had been shock by its electricity any where around the power pack or the case :) . I mean even before I upgraded, I never been shocked by any where near the power pack or the case cover and now, I seen to be getting alot of small shocks from the case cover and the power pack :_| . What's wrong and what should I do :( ?

And also, ever since I upgrade, my Duron 1.3Ghz CPU temperature (in Bios) seems to be had rise from 45 C to 56 C. And even when I change the CPU fan, it stays at 56 C. The heatsink and the CPU fan were all properly installed and the temperature seem to just stay at 56 C or sometimes 57. Now can some please tell me something, how new is this ASRock company?

p.s. everything that I've just said, happened after I upgraded the motherboard, just the motherboard, nothing but the motherboard.

Thank You :)

106880 2002-12-17 10:12:00 no its not normal. sounds like something is shorting to the case. or you are generating static and its earthing out to the case when you touch it.

i suggest you find a new tech.

not to sure about the temp. it could be the temp sensor is not reading right or the temp program you are useing is not setup correctly.

>how new is this ASRock company?

no idea. looks to be your usuallly small taiwan mobo maker. anyones guess on how good they are.

About that CPU temperature, I actually took the readings from the Bios it self. Isn't Bios suppose to be the most stablest part of the whole system?

Tell you the truth, ASRock is actaully from China. It's the first time I ever seen a motherboard from China.

Well, thanks again Tweak'e :)

No it's not normal at all . Is the tech guy at a shop / service centre? Or is he one of those guys who advertise on Woolworths notice board that come around to you place to do the job?

My guess is that the washers that come with the case havent been used thereby creating a short between the mobo and the case itself . Tell he to reinstall the motherboard .

Installed by the same tech guy? I had a Duron 1 . 4 that I had to fight with to keep the temp down, they run quite hot, AMD says they're fine up to 95 . With 2 case fans and a bigger cpu fan I got it idleing at 40-42 and 50-55 when playing 3D games . Any idea what the case temp is? Case temp souldn't really be more that 10 degrees above room temp .

I would suggest:

1 reinstalling the mobo .
2 Remove the cpu heatsink and fan, clean the thermal grease / pad and re-apply thermal grease .
3 Check the airflow through the case and add a case fan if there's not one already .

But one question, what do you mean by " . . . the washer with the case" do you mean the power pack?

I'll do what you suggested but if it doesn't work, what do I do? Would changing a new power pack solve the problem or is it just the motherboard that is causing all this problem?

And the CPU temperature, is the bios likely to have a bug in it?

Thank You

106885 2002-12-17 23:07:00 >>what do you mean by " . . . the washer with the case" do you mean the power pack?

no, crozier is referring to the washers, ie spacers, that should come with the motherboard to raise and separate the motherboard from the case itself so that the bottom of the motherboard doesn't touch the case .

We can't tell you what will solve the problem without actually seeing your setup . Checking out your motherboard will be the cheapest option at this stage because if it is this that is causing your problem a new power supply will solve nothing .

Just work through one thing at a time and post your results back here and people will offer further advice .

There a little brown washers which usually come with either the motherboard or the computer case (can't remember which), the're also available from Dick Smiths . These need to go between the screw and the motherboard when securing the motherboard to the case . There are also brass spacers which got between the mobo and the case itself . I'm not saying that this is definately the cause, but it's where I'd start .

What can you tell us about the tech, is he qualified at all . Does he work for himself?

If you're in the Wellington area I may be able to take a look at it for you .

What's the motherboard and what bios revision does it have?
