107345 2002-12-18 21:49:00 Out of interest...

I just installed AVG (free version) on Mum's computer.

When I tried to run 'update' it told me it couldn't detect an automatic connection to the internet.

So I simply made sure I was on the net and tried 'update' again but I got the same result??

No doubt I'm missing something really obvious. All help gratefully rec'd and much appreciated.

no i don't think so. tho it is way better than useing some old out of date antivirus. mind you having said that i have yet to see avg die in any machine unlike nortons which seems to pack a sad every so often.

if you have an upto date paid antivirus i would keep it and switch over to avg when it becomes out of date.

107347 2002-12-18 22:15:00 AVG I find OK, but it does tend to claim that its database is up-to-date (on my computer) when it isn't.
I allowed someone else to use my machine for a couple of days, after which it started behaving funny. Checked with AVG that claimed it was up-to-date and came up clean. Then updated AVG from Grisoft from internet and it then claimed I had Datom worm. Stuffed up my notepad by renaming it note.com and putting in something else unhelpful that called itself notepad. Also produced several files with MSVXD in their names.
All good clean fun. But be aware.

Same with me but I just update it 'once in a while' manually. Maybe every two-three weeks and it works fine. Used to puzzle me but now I don't worry about it.

107349 2002-12-19 01:23:00 I have found, that if you install AVG from cover discs, it will NOT update. This applies to PCWorld June 2002 - haven't checked any others but assume the same. Solution is to D/L from their site - after that no problems at all. Highly recommended.
