2002-12-18 03:19:00 | Hi, I can't use any of the shortcuts on my desktop and I can't open up the control panel, my computer, internet explorer etc. However all the programs in the program menu I can get into and outlook. I get a message saying windows cannot find.......please make sure you have typed the correct name. When I try to get into control panel the icons disappear briefly from the desktop then come back and nothing.I am the administrator on my computer, all other users are not having this problem and they can access everything. I have restored my computer to an earlier a date and run a virus scan. Where to now can anyone please help? I haven't used any reg cleaner programs, have just been basically checking mail.

Right click on one of the icons that will not work. Select "properties" Click on "find target" The program that is activated by the icon should be found. Post back and tell us what happens. |

2002-12-18 04:52:00 | I'm running XP . I did what you said clicked on my computer and when I hit find target it acted as if it was going to shut down and returned to desktop with all the icons disappearing and then returning . I've also checked my firewall encase something major was blocked and everything was ok there . It's only happening in the administrator account, the other user accounts are fine .

2002-12-18 04:58:00 | No. You need to right click on a program icon, "Your Computer" is not a program, its a system access. Try it on a program you have installed, a game etc. Not Network, My Computer, Recycle bin or the like

2002-12-18 05:36:00 | It certainly sounds like you have some sort of corrupted file problem with your admin log-on. Or a virus? Firstly, be aware that if you lose your log-in due to corrupted files, anything stored in "My Documents" under your log-in could dissappear. Backup anything that falls into this category, while you still have access. Then go Start|Run Type SFC /scannow in the run dialogue box. That command will compare system files with their original files and replace any damaged ones. There is a space after the command, SFC <space> /scannow You may need to place your XP CD in the drive, if asked. If its a pre-install it should know where to find the files on the hard drive. I assume you have always updated your anti-virus definitions weekly, you need to be aware that if a virus gets in, it "deactivates" the antivirus program in most cases. I assume you have never opened dodgy attachments?

2002-12-18 09:54:00 | Thanks for your help. I followed your instructions and did the system scan. It completed the scan but there were no instructions or information after it was completed. I rebooted and everything is still the same. I couldn't back up my documents because I couldn't get in. My virus definitions were up to date, they had just been done yesterday with a full scan. I always keep them up to date because I'm paranoid about getting a virus...I'm running AVG. And I haven't opened any dodgy attachments. I have a built in system recovery and also have the cd's. Any suggestions as to what I should do now?

2002-12-18 10:07:00 | You never mentioned that you couldn't get access to your files . That suggests the login files are corrupt? And as you are the Administrator, that a real problem If you have nothing of importance on the PC, then yes, a full recovery would fix it . Its probably the quickest as well . Just be aware that you will lose anything installed or saved to the HDD when you do . That goes for other users on it as well . I have had the experience twice in the last year with failed HDD's, but I backup daily to a separate HDD, and weekly to a CDR (but this is a business PC) . Its surprising how well things go again after a re-install . I am not sure you understand about viruses, when a new strain comes out, it can take a couple of days for the programs update to appear . If you get infected before the update is loaded then usually the virus de-activates your AV program . You still "think" its working, but it isn't . Updating after the event is useless, as the program may not run to detect the virus . Thats what happened recently with bugbear, and why so many got caught, and never knew it . If you ever suspect this is the problem, there are several "housecall" free on-line scanners you can use . Just use Google to find one . AVG is very good I believe . .

2002-12-18 10:35:00 | Thanks so much for all your help and PATIENCE. Anything I have on here can be replaced, so that's not a problem. If the log-in files are corrupt can I still use the built-in system recovery or will I have to use the cd's? On the positive side I will have a clean computer. Once again thanks I appreciate all your help.
