107068 2002-12-17 23:27:00 Anyone been having problems with Eudora web-mail or client over the last couple of weeks? It was down for about a week while they installed a new version of their web-mail prog and it has a few "exciting" new features which they make it difficult to find out about - probably because they don't want everybody to know. Secret No. 1 - they have changed the address of their POP server without telling anyone. It is now pop.mail.lycos.com. Secret No. 2 - they have slightly changed the format of the user login address to access the POP server from Eudora client (? and other clients), but you only find that out by carefully reading the setup instructions ("spot the difference"). Secret No. 3 (and this is the good one) - it is utterly pointless making the above changes if you don't have a paid account with Eudora because access to the POP server (and their SMTP server) is denied if you don't have one. You only find this out after you have problems and manage to track down an out-of-the-way help topic "Having trouble connecting to the POP server?" (or something like that). And all this is in spite of having a prominent "What's new" piece on the site's login page!. None of the above is in it or hinted at.
Their PR is non-existant and their communication to users (or would-be users) is abysmal. My gripe is about these attitudes - not the withdrawal of free services. They are perfectly entitled to make such withdrawals but they ought at least to have the courtesy and consideration to clearly declare them. By these and a string of other shortcomings they have demonstrated such apalling credibility that now I would never open a paid account with them and I would strongly recommend anyone else to give their services a big miss.

Can anyone recommend any good web-mail services which have POP server access (free ones would be a bonus)? I am considering PostMark.net and Fastmail.fm. Any comments on those?

17/12/02, 2300hrs. I originally posted this message about 12 hours ago but it hasn't appeared. Are we back to the "good" old days?

18/12/02, 1223hrs. Third time lucky, I hope. The message still hasn't been posted. I went off-line (but not out of pressf1) while I composed the message - does that flummox the system, even though I logged on again before sending the message? This time I have stayed on-line while pasting (yes, I saved a copy after the first miss) and sending, so I'll see how that goes.

107069 2002-12-18 00:25:00 Why don't you use your ISP email address for pop3 access and they will also have web mail as well if you want it.
Just use your Eudora web mail from the web site.

107070 2002-12-18 00:29:00 Hey

Take a look at This (sitefreenet.virtualave.net) - a small list of free pop mail servers.

Otherwise, I think Xtra offer a POP only service - at a price... However I have heard that Xtra have discontinued this service. If your interested give them an email and find out

Also, for some reason, Softhome have stopped NZ signups - I know as I have been trying to get one for the last 6 months. Although it says it's only "temporarily" It's been a real annoyance

I think not! if that was true how come i got email through pop.eudoramail.com (or is it pop3.....) thismorning using the acount i set up a few years back, and paid nought for.

As for the i want my own pop3 e-mail, i suggest you register the domain of your choice, pay $50/year to registerdirect (http://www.registerdirect.co.nz/) and get 10 10meg mailboxes "free" @yourdomain.co.nz i have 2 domains, and therefore have 19 spare pop3 mailboxes!

107072 2002-12-18 00:36:00 a further thought

www.orcon.net.nz offer free pop3 mail for "members" which does not mean that you have to agree to any "pay" services such as internet access etc

107073 2002-12-18 11:19:00 Thanks for the various replies.
"Clueless" - yes, changed the POP server address and format, for retrieval into Eudora client at least. The POP address that worked up till a couple of weeks age was 'eudoramail.com'. Now using that just gets a timeout. And using your server address didn't work for me either. Also, according to their latest instructions, the login for uplifting POP mail is the whole email address instead of just the part before the '@'. Actually, I think this is a boo boo in the instructions.
What sort of account do you have that you access with the address you gave? Is it webmail? How does the part of your e-mail address that follows the '@' read? This may have a bearing on the server address that is necessary.

.Clueless checks his mail@eudoramail.com settings in the accounts section of OE.....

pop.eudoramail.com

.Clueless sends email to his eudoramail.com account, types this and wanders into the kitchen

OMG .Clueless has mail!

Sorry, but i really don't agree that it has stopped working.

107075 2002-12-18 11:33:00 I should write a wee footnote

... it's got to be the flakiest pop server i have ever got mail from in my life!

107076 2002-12-19 10:33:00 Thanks again, but as I said yesterday I have always used plain 'eudoramail.com' for a domain name but since the Eudora webmail upgrade on 12/12 it no longer works - in Eudora client at least. I assume that you have used 'pop.eudoramail.com' for the domain field ever since you opened your account. Since you opened that account years ago I am wondering if it resides on a different server, with a different domain name, from mine (which is <2 yrs old). That, or the fact that you are retrieving with OE, might explain the fact that you are still getting mail. My son in London has been retrieving his Eudora webmail into OE - I shall find out what domain setting he has been using. Robin S_ (86)
107077 2002-12-19 13:20:00 Are we taking at cross purposes perhaps

'pop.eudoramail.com' (without the quotes) is my pop3 server setting, and yes i am using OE. I'm not sure what you mean by "domain feild"

I'll try it in Kmail, next post, which i'll do from SaM the Linux box

BTW as you correctly assumed, i been using these settings for about 5 years....

I got another @eudoramail.com address that i used to use in spam-magnet enviroments, i shall go check this now, using a different client.
