2002-12-20 05:39:00 | welcome to the world of windows. In short. Find an alternative to the programme that causes the crashes. If the crashes happen at random. Then record the file that causes the crash. And get back to u

2002-12-20 05:42:00 | I could almost say, welcome to computers. Even I suffer that from time to time and I have used win98/98se/and NT based systems. I use WinME as well now and as a rule it purrs along very well but once in a while for what ever reason decides it is time to belly up and once in a while when that happens even c/a/d will not respond. Does not seem specific to WinME, I have suffered the same of all other systems. Could be just one of those days that all computers seem to suffer from time to time, could be a program running in the background, could be a driver, or a host of other annoying little things. Generally when I get problems running to close together, a defrag seems to settle things down once again. Related....? who knows.

2002-12-20 06:13:00 | When you go CTR-ALT-DEL once and get the list of programs running, does one in particular say "not responding". See also what else is running in the background, a lot of those programs are not necessary and can be removed from start-up. To do so go Start > Run and type in msconfig Then click on the start-up tab and disable any programs that are not necessary. Look at Pacs-Portal (www.pacs-portal.co.uk) for advice on which can be safely disabled. If you do disable any, upon rebooting you will get a message about using selective startup, tick the "do not show message again" box, and then OK. Sometimes having a lot of unnecessary programs running in the background is an open invitation for a punch-up between them.

2002-12-20 06:52:00 | IMHO WinME Is the most crash-prone windows out. There are some things you can do, just general maintenance. Defrag, Stop Startup progs loading (www.superrsoft.com and get Super Rabbit Magic Set), run Ad-Aware and other things like that! Hope you manage to fix it! Chilling_Silence

2002-12-20 07:43:00 | I run ME and find it fine... look at your RAM - mine froze recently when I was trying to load a programs from a CD rom I have 128 with a cheapie AMD Duron 900 Mhz CPU if you're multi tasking and have a lot of unnecessary programs running (I had 21!!! when I pressed c/a/delete until I wiped 90% out from start-up) that will freeze it for sure... also download from www.liveeye.com the Dramatic memory optimizer tool - as recommended by PC world hereabouts - which tells you exactly yr RAM specifications and monitors yr CPU usage... now I have 72,000k frre RAM, memory load down to 40% whereas before using the tool it was averaging 71% also configure your swap file so it is not unnecessarily resizing this will help speed things up though whether this will help/not yr freezing problem I don't know:)(see on this website "tipworld" section IIRC)... good luck

2002-12-20 09:30:00 | As a related interest, I was using Win98 with an AMD k6 450mhz. It crashed (bsod's and all that) fairly frequently. I clocked up to 500mhz and it crashed much more frequently (at 550 it crashed most of the time). I clocked down to 400 and it didn't crash much at all. Now I use an Athlon2000+ with the same Win98. Basically, it just doesn't crash, no bsod's for about 2 months and few enough other freezes. Seems to me that the crash rate of at least Win98, and prob ME as well, depends on the extent to which one is using the cpu near its capacity. Exceed the CPU capacity and of course it won't work at all. Push the cpu too close to its capacity and you get system crashes. Workarounds can help, but seems to me this is a basic difficulty. Any dissenters?

2002-12-20 19:20:00 | Rugila's comments are kinda true in reagards to hardware BSOD's. Overclocking will cause your system to crash. Mostly because when you overclock you put it out of sink with other hardware on your computer and hence things get stuffed up. THe most common hardware BSOD is caused by RAM. however in my expereince 95% or more of BSOD's can be attributed to software causing a fault in a windows driver. Usually a vxd or the likes rectifying the software issue generally resolves BSOD's.
