| 107675 | 2002-12-20 02:33:00 | Can anyone tell me what things like "usenet.alt.computers.os2.applications" mean? This came from a forum, but is the whole domain.alt.topic.subtopic thingie back from the BBS days or something? |

It consists of a set of "newsgroups" with names that are classified hierarchically by subject . "Articles" or "messages" are "posted" to these newsgroups by people on computers with the appropriate software -- these articles are then broadcast to other interconnected computer systems via a wide variety of networks . Some newsgroups are "moderated"; in these newsgroups, the articles are first sent to a moderator for approval before appearing in the newsgroup . Just log onto "groups" on google . |

| 107677 | 2002-12-20 02:50:00 | It's a"newsgroup" . That's what we spent our time on before this WWW rubbish started . (I found I could keep up with 3 or 4 newsgroups which were about the computer types I was using) . "usenet" is the name for it . . . Go to google . Click on the "Groups" button . There are something in the tens of thousands of groups now (mostly in the alt group) . I still look at comp . risks . . . great stuff . That group you saw a reference to is in the "alt" category . . . = alternate . . in which subgroups could be started without discussion and voting . You can go down the name: computers --obvious, os2 -- a great operating system developed by Microsoft and IBM in partnership, until MS stabbed IBM in the back, appl -- probably about applications for OS/2 . All very logical . B-) The groups are cluttered now by the spammers; they use to suffer from the September influx of US students who were given their Internet access . ;-) |
