| 108013 | 2002-12-21 08:47:00 | why with cpu production they are made in wafers opposed to rectangles or squares? :_| |

| 108014 | 2002-12-21 08:51:00 | The semiconducter base material is "grown" as a crystal in ultra sterile environment. Pity silicon does not have a convenient "square" crystalline shape, isn't it. |

| 108015 | 2002-12-21 08:59:00 | as far as i know it is to do with the way the wafer is growen rather then cast of molded. the following is taken from the web page at: www.leb.e-technik.uni-erlangen.de "The first step in wafer production is the fabrication of a silicon single crystal. A small crystal, called the seed crystal, is rotated and slowly withdrawn from the molten hyper-pure silicon to give a cylindrical crystal. The silicon crystal is sliced to obtain thin disks, known as wafers on which chips are made, hundreds at a time, during the following processing. After slicing, the wafers are finely ground, mirror-smooth polished and cleaned." |
