2002-12-20 20:47:00 | hi, I have a big problem. Firstly, i'm running Win 98se on a duron 900, 256mb ram, GF2 64mb. My problem is, my PC keeps locking up - and its not your normal lock up, because when it happens i can still mouse the mouse cursor on the screen, but no buttons etc work, ctrl - alt - del doesn't do anything.... and i have to do a reset. This has only started happening recently (few days) when about 5 days ago i unistalled the game "max Payne", i then went away for 3 days, and have just came back yesterday. now, the lockups happen all the time, i'll give some examples: Turn on PC, everythings loaded, open up MusicMatch Jukebox, the loading splashscreen appears, and the pc freezes (not the mouse tho) Turn on pc, dial up to net, open a browser (i've tried both IE6, NS7) and it freezes (however, this doesn't always happen, sometimes it doesn't freeze until i type in a URL and press enter, and sometimes it works fine, and i can surf the net) Also, when i dial up to the net, and sogn into MSN messanger it freezes - it does this everytime! i can't do any scans or anything, because as soon as i open the program it freezes, or it freezes half way through the scan :( another thing thats only happened since the unistall, is when i go into My Computer, theres nothing there, and then a torch starts "searching" i've left this going for 20min to no luck, its the same whenever i go into Windows Explorer. I have no cd's or floppys in there drives when i do this. Please help, because my PC is really useless at the moment (i'm righting this from another PC) O - one otehr thing, Outlook Express works fine, i haven't had a lock up running that. Let me no if u need any more info Thanks in advance. Cheers Alex

2002-12-20 21:00:00 | Sounds like you'll need to do a reinstallation of Windows. Your registry appears to be corrupted - you might try to run an application such as regclean, but I think best course would be to bite the bullet - backup any data files that you can, then reinstall Win over your existing setup. If that doesn't help, reformat the drive, and reinstall everything. | Greg S (201) | |
2002-12-20 21:03:00 | Oh ya, it wouldn't hurt to first try reinstall Max Payne, see if that helps, and then uninstall it again, using Add/Remove Programs to do it. | Greg S (201) | |
2002-12-20 21:11:00 | heres how to get ur system working perfectly: 1) take your hardrive out 2) go to a friends house. plug your hardrive into his IDE cable and make your hardrive a Slave. (!! if your friend his 2k or xp, make sure he hasnt got ntfs...he needs fat32 !!) 3) make sure in his bios it detected your hardrive, if it did, proceed into windows with his computer. 4) open My Computer from his desktop and find your drives (your "c" will probably be "d", depending on how your bios likes to arrange drives) 5) grab all important things from yopur drives and place them in a folder on his drive called "backup - your name" 6) get him to burn all your backup onto a cd(s), otherwise get him to take his HD out and go back to ur house. change your HDD to master. 7) put in a 98 bootdisk (if u dont have one, make one at ur friends house, plenty of websites have 'em) (!!! I recommend you get XP, you more than meet the requirements...i wood definatley recommend full xp home (u dont need pro, and upgrade sux) 8) Still going by your 98, once u put disk in type "format c:" and hit Y for yes. after that restart and choose from 98's startup disk "start with cdrom support (since u lost ur drivers @ reformat) there u shood have access to ur cdrom drive. type in "d:\setup.exe" substituting d for ur cdrom drive (it may be "e", some disks make "virtual drives" 9) install windows 10) plug in your friends hd, making his slave this time, or put in CD's and restore files

2002-12-20 21:20:00 | before you go reinstalling i would give the pc a general clean up . clean out any spyware (adaware) clean out any unneeded registry entries (regcleaner) check for bho's (bho deamon) run system file checker clean out temp files and index . dats's give it a scandisk and defrag also check your bios settings . possible if you have been away for a while they reverted back to default (time might have been out as well)

2002-12-21 00:20:00 | wow - thanks for fast and detailed replys! anyway, i reinstalled Max payne, everything fine now! i can go into my computer, run MSN, surf the net etc.... all fine. I will go and unistall it now, and hopefully it'll stay working. Also, i'm thinking about getting Windows XP, firstly, wots the difference between Pro and home? and also, as i've always had 98se, when u install a new OS, do you have to format your pc first? or does it install overtop? and if it installs over top, do u lose all your files and settings? cheers

2002-12-21 01:01:00 | Your question about XP home and pro: XP pro has a lot of administration tools and security capabilities that xp home does not . If you have a LAN, then getting xp pro is definately an advantage as security settings often need to be tweaked (especially if networked to win98 or other OS's) If you can afford the extra cost of XP pro, it is worth it . With windows XP, it is possible to upgrade from 98 and keep all installed programs and settings BUT any problems (like the one you have just had) and any other strange things lurking WILL also be carried over . I would SERIOUSLY recommend a format and clean install, at least that way you know that any problems you get from then on are not related to an old application you uninstalled before installing XP . (Problems caused like this are very difficult to hunt down and solve) . Backing up those files and stuff is worth it anyway, as you are likely to lose them if anything goes wrong with the install process . HTH Craig .

2002-12-21 01:48:00 | thanks craig for that. another few questions.. i currently have a 8gb hdd, but i have ordered a 40gb which i should get in a week or 2. anyway, i want to take out the 8gb, and have the 40gb as the sole HDD, is there a way to transfer the WHOLE 8gb (about 7gb contents) over to the 40gb? like imaging a cd, but a hardrive instead? is this possible? what would i need to use/do? what would u suggest i do? I've got alot of programs, files, settings etc on there i would like to keep, but i have a cd-rw. would u suggest that i just take out the 8, put in the 40gb, install winXP and start from scratch? or copy over contents, and install WIndowsXP over top? OR Copy over contents, partion HDD into 2 20's, have 98 on one, and install XP on the other, and over time, transfer files, settings etc over to XP, then, delete WIn98, and make HDD back into 1 40gb? Your suggestions/advice would be much appreciated.
