| 107833 | 2002-12-21 03:19:00 | Although a clean install seems like a harder option, it takes a lot of the hassle out of fixing problems later. I have had a number of friends who have upgraded to XP (both home and pro) and have had terminal problems (ie the PC is unbootable) a few weeks down the track, that took hours to try and fix, and always resulted in a clean format and install in the end anyway. I would also keep the 40Gb as one partition, and avoid dual booting with windows98, unless you REALLY need an old (dos based) application that you can't upgrade to a newer version of. The best way to find all the files and things you need to copy over is to look through every installed program to see if there are saved files and things that you need to keep, and copy them to a backup folder on your hard drive (you can write this to cd or copy from hdd to hdd later as you choose) Do this over the space of a week or so, as things you will remember important stuff over a period of time, and keep a list of everything you have backed up, just to be sure. Remember, you can put your old hard drive into the PC as a slave and leave it there for a few weeks in case there is a file or something you want to keep. A lot of programs (like MS Office) has settings saved in a file (in the case of office, NORMAL.DOT) which you can copy over, but I seriously recommend that you don't transfer registry settings (where most program options are set). Live with a slight hassle for a while to reconfigure everything - it is worth it in the end. If you need help backing up specific files, or notoriously difficult programs like outlook express, feel free to ask. HTH Craig. |
