1324848 2013-01-25 08:42:00 I'm trying to SSH to my Raspberry Pi from outside via Telecom broadband through a Thomson ST5x6v6 then a LinkSys Router whence my RPi by ethernet cable. I've configured the RPi to have a fixed IP and it and the router for Port 27258. Using these, I can access the RPi OK from inside the LAN like this:
ssh pi@192.168.2.5 -p 27258
but when I try from outside the LAN using:
ssh pi@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -p 27258
where the IP address is what shows up in WhatIsMyIP, it times out.
I've also tried setting SSH in the Thomson to transfer from port 22 to port 27258

Am I missing something?

BTW, all this works OK via TelstraClear cable (static IP) and a LinkSys cable router, so I suspect it has something to do with either the Thomson router or the Telecom system.

1324849 2013-01-25 09:08:00 It's all in the Thompson I'd say, telecom's Internet should be no different. Those thompsons are basic home user type units and they aren't very good at doing that. The firewall is possibly blocking it but in my experience some of those low end routers/modems don't even port forward properly. They say they do, but in reality

Could you try with another modem/router if available? If not someone with more knowledge with the Thompson units will tell you what's what. I don't really know enough about them.

1324850 2013-01-25 09:11:00 In that case you would want to ssh to port 22 on your external ip, although I would change the thompson to forward a different external port or else you will get every bot on the net trying passwords on your poor wee pi's sshd. fred_fish (15241)
1324851 2013-01-25 09:25:00 No, I tried accessing port 22, but that timed out as well.
I suspect The Error Guy is right, it's something to do with the Thomson.
Yet, LogMeIn to another machine on the network works fine - LogMeIn doesn't work on RPi unfortunately.

1324852 2013-01-25 09:32:00 That points to your configuration of the Thompson :)

If your first post is correct & you have TWO routers between the world and your ssh server you will also need port forwarding on the Linksys, unless of course it is just being a switch.

edit: ssh isn't special, it can use any port.
In the Thompson where it says "SSH" it is simply referring to port 22 (the default port for it).
Just set a port forward for another port to the listening port in the corresct internal ip.
