1324458 2013-01-23 07:27:00 Hey all,

Windows 7 corrupted and died so installed mint as I haven't used linux for a long time now. So far loving it but I am getting extremely annoyed that file sharing hasn't been sorted "out of the box".

I think I have samba installed and have installed system-config-samba but I cannot find the gui anywhere! I'm sure I can handle it once I find it but where the hell is it? If someone can point it out that'd be great. All I want to do is access windows shares so I can copy some data onto lappy from desktop.

Cheers

1324459 2013-01-23 07:42:00 Just to confirm -- Is it the windows shared and Mint cant see them, or is it windows are not shared.

When Ever I've been using ubuntu, the first thing I do is change what appears to be the default workgroup From "Workgroup" to what ever your workgroup is called. Just installing Samba wont do it. Once I've Edited samba’s configuration file with a text editor, it usually works.

Mind you all the work I've done has been with Ubuntu.

1324460 2013-01-23 07:43:00 Yep have folders shared in windows and want access from mint. Workgroup is default at workgroup and that's what the workgroup is, confirmed by looking at config file. hueybot3000 (3646)
1324461 2013-01-23 07:48:00 Can Other Windows computers see the windows shares, ( that's assuming you have more windows computers) wainuitech (129)

1324463 2013-01-23 08:14:00 Yeah the shares Im wanting to access have been there for a couple of years. I'm no newbie to windows :-)

It's odd cos I don't even see the folder let alone the contents...

1324465 2013-01-23 08:36:00 last time i used mint it worked out of the box, odd your isn't. Have you tried another distro maybe try puppy on a flash drive save installing it gary67 (56)
1324466 2013-01-23 08:54:00 As a gnome fork, it probably still uses the gvfs mechanism.
Never been a gnome user so it is all a bit of a mystery to me.

No "Network" icon in the file manager?
Can you type "smb://server/share/" in the address bar?

1324467 2013-01-23 21:13:00 Just to carry on or confirm -- Have you actually installed Mint or running it from a Live DVD ??

I downloaded the same version as you mentioned - Cinnamon - Last night, ran it from the Live CD and it didn't or couldn't see the network anywhere.

Installed it this morning on a workshop PC and it sees the Network, all shares and has acess as any other windows based PC, Windows Computers can also see and acess a shared folder on Mint without any problems. No Need to install Samba, its already there
Went Via Start ( or mint menu) Places > Network > Windows Network.

Looking from Windows 7 to Network, Workshop-Mint is the install and what I'm using to post this.

I KNOW I'm going to regret this - But its actually a better version of Linux than any of the others I've tried in the past.
