| 1299920 | 2012-09-09 22:23:00 | Thought I'd take on the role of PCW Entertainment critic. My take on last night's inaugural from the safety and anonymity of my Ellerslie pad :2cents: The Judges Ali Campbell, Rachel Hunter, and Jason Kerrison. A reasonable showing by all except the ex-UB40 man who should have more technical nouse. Our Rachel proved she is more than just another long legged blonde. Jason? Jason who? 7/10 Compere Tamati Coffey did well, managing to do the job without coming across as a complete twit. Part of that though may have been due to a move away from the scripted banalities his overseas counterparts were saddled with. Tamati, spare us the copycat Jim Hickey salutes. 8/10 Shameless bowing to audience pressure Judge Jason rightfully hit the r/eject button during a tuneless performance by Dane. But the audience was in a PC frame of mind, giving a standing ovation to Dane, forcing a retraction by Jason, who lamely said he only pressed the button because the performance was so good, he didn't have to hear any more. Yeah, right. 2/10 Best good sports of the night Russell Gray, the dancer from Christchurch, and Rachel for getting up on stage and dancing with him. 10/10 Most Shameless Politicing Tamaroa from Palmerston Nth with his rendition of one of Rod Stewart's hits, in front of Rod's ex squeeze. Our Rachel took it in her stride, and Tamaroa's performance was good. 6/10 Most fun act The JGeeks Funny and apolitical. 7/10 Most Awesome act Andre Vegas Professional and competent. 6/10 Dowager Prodigy Flawless hitting of the notes from 91yo Olivia Turner. 8/10 Child Prodigies Ocean, the 9yo yodeller from Ashburton, and 10yo Jessie Hiller from Wellington singing Panus Angelicus. 8/10 Has New Zealand got Talent? YES! The show got off to a great start, let's hope the standard is maintained. :clap |

Jason Kerrison is the lead singer for OpShop, one of NZ's most successful local bands over the last decade, and he's a member of the NZ Order of Merit for services to music. |

| 1299923 | 2012-09-09 23:34:00 | Thanks for that. I personally had never heard of him, but he does have credentials as you just pointed out. PS Just Googled OpShop, but I'm afraid the only thing recognisable to me is their music played in the NZ Post advert. |

| 1299925 | 2012-09-10 00:12:00 | It may not be marketable, but there was plenty of genuine talent displayed. Even the tongue-in-cheek 'one man band' was OK for the genre, and underneath it all I got the impression that he would have played his cornet much better if he had both hands on it. I disregard audience over-reaction, including standing ovations, they get carried away by the heat of the moment. Early 'Reds' by the judges were pretty much bang on. Cheers Billy 8-{) (Ex Brass Band cornet player of little note and even less renown!) :o |

Early 'Reds' by the judges were pretty much bang on. Standing Ovations have been Americanised. I beleive a standing ovation should only be awarded for a performance that is truly commendable. These days, SOs are given at the end of most performances, or during an introduction where the audience recognises a particular piece. My contention is, what do you do when something comes along that is really deserving of an ultimate accolade? If the accolade has been awarded beforehand indiscriminately for every mediocre performance, you're left with nothing. And the performers are cheated. THIS (www.helium.com) says it much better. |

Even I had heard of him. Shows how much the OP knows But I liked the show The big guy missed a few notes, and he should dress properly as should that young Indian girl. |

| 1299928 | 2012-09-10 02:50:00 | The audience are totally controlled and are told when to cheer, clap, boo or whatever. A really good or for that matter really bad performance may elicit a spontaneous reaction but that is the exception rather than the rule. Whilst it is entertaining and potential talent is there in some cases I really think the population of NZ is to small to support a program like this for long. | CliveM (6007) | ||
| 1299929 | 2012-09-10 03:00:00 | Yes Clive you are right. That is why I keep saying that NZ needs 3 or 4 times the population it has. It would make all those shows better and give artists and performers more people to show and play to. And more people to support them. Just as long as they all have a trade and that they speard ou all over country. |
