2013-01-23 06:40:00 | www.trademe.co.nz As the others said, $300.00 is about how much you can spend on a graphics card at the minimum cost. I spent $285.00 on a last generation CPU alone... My GPU cost me $60 :p Is that system good for gaming? The card? It seems a low end card though, what about a Radeon 6450? Trademe is full of Pentium D or Pentium 4 PCs, with a few exceptions, a new cpu would cost about 100 and a gpu about 100, and RAM 60, PSU 40 and then It will total about 390 after everything.

2013-01-23 08:37:00 | You'll want a 775 socket cpu (Core 2 Duo era) or better, a 9800 GT (preferably GTX) or better for the GPU and a reliable 400w+ PSU. Try to get a 775 board with DDR3 support as DDR2 ram will cost you an arm and a leg. | icow (15313) | |
2013-01-23 08:52:00 | pcpartpicker.com You'll be surprised at how good the 7540D is, Skyrim on medium @ 720p runs at an average of over 30fps. Blops 2 runs on a 2007 game engine that isn't nearly as advanced... (to be fair skyrim runs on a dated engine too) + $10 case from TM and re-use and old HDD. Can probably get a $5 IDE one off TradeMe. For more fps you can always chuck in a lower-end radeon card in and crossfire with the integrated gpu.

Well I don't recommend the GT 520 but it'll do fine if you are on a VERY strict budget. It's better than the HD 6450. I play Mass Effect 3 at 45 FPS on High, Rage at 21-25 FPS, Skyrim at 25-30 FPS on Medium. Plays everything. Just don't try Crysis 2 with this card... I can still happily game with lowish FPS...:p But still a GTX 560 Ti or a 660 Ti would make a world of difference Save your money mate. |

2013-01-23 22:30:00 | My opinion, you can get someone's 2yr old+ 2nd hand pc and play older games ok for $300 with a bit of luck but it'll quickly run into problems with newer games and not be worth upgrading. Your call. | dugimodo (138) | |
2013-01-23 23:25:00 | I agree with dugimodo. Personally I'd invest in * a nice new Intel 2011 socket motherboard with on-board video (no video card), and at least 4 DIMM slots (RAM) * a nice power supply, 800 to 1200 watts. I'd scrimp on the * cheap tower case. The more fan vents the better, even if they don't have fans yet. The smallest fan vents should be 12 cm. * cheap CPU * 2 GB RAM (make sure you leave some spare slots) * cheap hard drive * keyboard / mouse Phase 2 when you have the cash: * install some 12 cm case fans (good cooling is key in a gaming PC) * upgrade the RAM * switch to a nice graphic card. Phase 3 * the CPU * the hard drive(s) * bigger monitor * gaming keyboard / mouse

2013-01-23 23:45:00 | A gaming console perhaps? If you gonna upgrade like that overtime it'll cost you more eventually .... I don't play games, with my 4yr old PC, I guess very few CPU will still support my motherboard, but I know with the RAM they are like 4x compared to DDR3 (current stuff). Mine runs on DDR2 which was mostly a Computer Lounge $1k custom build for the box. I hazard to guess that 2yr after you may be limited in what you can find unless you go for second hand parts and relatively more costly. If it must be a PC, then maybe a second hand PC like a Core 2, used that for a couple of months or a year if need be and then throw in a few hundred for a graphics card. Correct me if I am wrong but that may give you *some* satisfactory performance. And as you say ex the monitor.

2013-01-24 22:22:00 | for that sort of price you should look at an xbox 360 or just save up more around 600-700 is about what you need. | jonovw (16835) | |
