| 1299418 | 2012-09-07 00:58:00 | It is fantastic! One helluva speed for a yacht. I was surprised, though, how the news people made out that the technolgy was something new. New on a yacht perhaps, although I don't think so. But hyrdofoils have been around for the past 40 years at least. I recall the hydrofoil ferry travelling to Waiheke Island (in the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland) in the late 60s. Nothing new at all. It actually went to Pakatoa Island, then owned by Sir Robert Kerridge, who also owned the hydrofoil, which I think was originally built in Italy. |

While not disputing that it went to Pakatoa, it was called the Manu Wai and also went to Waiheke. I was living on Waiheke at Palm Beach at the time and rode on it a few times, but only a few times as I recall it was more expensive than the conventional ferries, the Baroona and the Iris Moana. |

Have a look here - en.wikipedia.org I can clearly recall a number of sailing vessels using foils. |

| 1299422 | 2012-09-09 22:14:00 | Hmmm, but they’re using “Maori Wind” so what happens when they get to San Francisco? They have to use Native American Red Indian wind ... apparently they have got a special dispensation from the Apache Iwi ... something to do with beads and muskets ... :D There was also a hydrofoil operating out of Queenstown many years ago (probably 35 -40) ... not sure whether it's still operating. Just went to show the news item to a friend ... it seems to have been taken offline. Maybe One News filmed something that they shouldn't have. I would appreciate it if someone else could check to see if the link is still working. |
