108175 2002-12-22 04:17:00 First of all I've been asked to "Exit the X Server" How do I do this?

Then "Set your default run level so you will boot to console and not start up X." Again how do I do this?

Then it says "If you are unsure about how to perform the previous steps, refer to the documentation that came with your Linux distribution. This will make it easier to recover if there is a problem during the installation."

Basically I couldn't find anything without reading a lot of irrelevant information that I thought that I've seen some good Linux Gurus on here that they would be able to help me out.

I'm trying to install the Nvidia graphic drivers for my graphic card and all the times I've tried it I've been unsuccessful resulting in reinstalling since I couldn't figure out what went wrong.

108176 2002-12-22 04:47:00 CTRL+ALT+BkSpc exits the X Server I think but how do I change the Run Level so that it boots into Console instead of X Kame (312)
108177 2002-12-22 06:59:00 Do you really want to boot to the command shell instead of a gui? You need a run level of 3 instead of 5 to stay at the command shell. If you type 'setup' at the command line, that should give you an option to change the runlevel. Dolby Digital (160)
108178 2002-12-22 07:14:00 To change your run-level, edit the file inittab either using gedit in the GUI or mcedit at the command prompt. Look for a line that says "init:5:initdefault:"

From the comments above it you will see that 5 is the GUI (X11). Change the 5 to a 3 and you will boot only to the command prompt. The GUI can still be started by typing startx.

108179 2002-12-22 11:38:00 ok well I found something about the bootdisk being able to boot to console and I tried it... commands for the bootdisk were "linux 2" which got me into console without starting X and from there I installed the nvidia drivers and changed the XF86config file and everything seems to be running ok now and games are a lot smoother.
