108677 2002-12-24 06:06:00 Hello All,
I have a Athlon XP 2000 with 512 DDR ram and all that with a Lucent Winmodem (crappy i know but ADSL is coming soon hopefully) anyways when i go to disconnect or reconnect the whole computer freezes up for a few seconds as uses around 90-100% of processing power to do this . Thats using something like 1000mhz or something to disconnect the damn modem! Is there any way to fix this, to stop it freezing up .

Also the modem keeps disconnecting at random times and windows doesn't know therefore windows thinks its still on the net .

LOL and another problem with the modem is when it disconnects it sometimes freezes up the machine .

lol come to think of its a really really crappy modem unless i can fix it!

108678 2002-12-24 06:15:00 Apart from the standard answer of "make sure your modem drivers are the latest", not much you can do. Be thankful that it works?

All modem functions are done in software in WinModems, and therefore there is a possibility that unintentional conflicts can occur with other software that is running. Its hard for Modem Manufacturers to predict if all other software possible will behave in a structured manner, and allow their products to run as they intended.

My own experience is, that when you remove the WinModem (physically) from the PC, it makes a satisfying "clunk" when dropped in the rubbish bin.

Many people of course have no problems. (probably the majority have no problems) but I would never use a non-hardware based modem by choice.
