| 108677 | 2002-12-24 06:06:00 | Hello All, I have a Athlon XP 2000 with 512 DDR ram and all that with a Lucent Winmodem (crappy i know but ADSL is coming soon hopefully) anyways when i go to disconnect or reconnect the whole computer freezes up for a few seconds as uses around 90-100% of processing power to do this . Thats using something like 1000mhz or something to disconnect the damn modem! Is there any way to fix this, to stop it freezing up . Also the modem keeps disconnecting at random times and windows doesn't know therefore windows thinks its still on the net . LOL and another problem with the modem is when it disconnects it sometimes freezes up the machine . lol come to think of its a really really crappy modem unless i can fix it! - David |

All modem functions are done in software in WinModems, and therefore there is a possibility that unintentional conflicts can occur with other software that is running. Its hard for Modem Manufacturers to predict if all other software possible will behave in a structured manner, and allow their products to run as they intended. My own experience is, that when you remove the WinModem (physically) from the PC, it makes a satisfying "clunk" when dropped in the rubbish bin. Many people of course have no problems. (probably the majority have no problems) but I would never use a non-hardware based modem by choice. |
