108669 2002-12-24 05:18:00 I have a amd athlon 1600+. The latest from the motherboard manufacturer says it can take a cpu upgrade to 2200+.
two questions:

1/ would the difference between the 2 CPU's be an incredibly noticeable jump or just an average increase and not worth it?

2/what if i put in a 2400+ CPU?

Thanks in advance.

Paul.

Question 1:-
I don't think you are going to notice much difference depending on what you are doing. In theory you will get a 20% jump in CPU speed. The CPU though is not the only speed increase you can get. It depends on the rest of the system as well. If you are looking for better frame rates for games then it would be better to upgrade the Video card. You may also consider more RAM.

Question 2:-
According to what you say above the motherboard will not support a 2400+ cpu. It quite possibly will but you will maybe need to flash the BIOS. The other problem you have is what to do with the 1600+ cpu you take out of the motherboard?

108674 2002-12-24 06:23:00 Perhaps if you told us what motherboard you have, someone could comment further?
You are asking people about the capabilities of an unknown device?

Sorry, but the crystal ball is fogged this close to Christmas....:)

108675 2002-12-24 06:23:00 good advise. mainly for game play as have 512 ddr and nVidia ti4600 graphics. The old cpu? didn't think it would be worth much so hadn't given any thought.
thanks
paul
