109058 2002-12-25 23:05:00 hi all,
my dvd-rom often freezes during a film. it's always in the last half of the film, and it happens with every disc - to a lesser or greater extent. it's not the discs.

is it just a crap dvd-drive that has difficult reading the outer half of the disc..?

WinXP, nVidia GeForce440MX 64MB w/tv out, WinDVD 3.1, (dvd-rom running at UDMA-2 - set as secondary slave), P4 2.4GB, 256 DDR-SDRAM.

happy holidays.
(sorry if this topic has been done before - i looked but couldn't find)

109059 2002-12-25 23:21:00 have you tried a programme other than WinDvd?
if not, then you might want to do that.
does it freeze for a second or so or is it a full freeze that needs a reset?

check if DMA is enabled for the drive .

when the dvd stops can you still access the drive in explorer?

109061 2002-12-25 23:47:00 what other software is good?

it frezzes fully. need to eject the disc. even task manager can't shut the program down until disc is out.

109062 2002-12-25 23:49:00 my first post states that the drive is running at UDMA-2 - (according to intel application acclerator), and the POST. daninjapan (2703)
109063 2002-12-25 23:50:00 generic, (apparently) crap brand - epo???

i dunno it - it was real cheap - maybe for reason eh???

109064 2002-12-25 23:54:00 Its one thing to have UDMA enabled on your hardware. Its another to enable DMA in the software.
Goto device manager click on your drive, goto its properties and ensure that dma is enabled.
I don't think this will fix your problem though. I think you have a software failure with windvd.
Download any other dvd software. Zoomplayer is one that i know of.

DMA needs to be enabled in WINDOWS as well .

nvidia's NVDVD is not to bad .

what programs have you got running in the background?

109066 2002-12-26 00:03:00 explain exactly how to check DMA in WinXP please. i assume you don't trust intel application accelerator..

naturally i only have 1 program running in background. zonealarm so my software doesn't use my always on connection at its own will.

109067 2002-12-26 00:26:00 usually under device manger/ dvd/cd/hd drive. (i don't have XP so i can't tell u exactly).

no antivirus???

zoomplayer is a DVD front end you will still need the dvd software.
