109043 2002-12-27 02:34:00 It's probably asking you to log in again. It's now a "new machine". You should have been able to "tell" it what its IP address is. If you gave it one previously, the "ifconfig" command should tell you. Graham L (2)
109044 2002-12-27 02:40:00 Yeah, Did that, Restarted, and still no joy, tried disabling the password encryption and still no joy, so I re-enabled that coz I didnt wanna make even more probs (When disbaled, I didnt even have the option of username/password)
I was reading thru some other posts and found that the security level had to be changed from user to share so I tried that and restarted the SMB service (Just in case) and I have access to the tmp folder that I enabled (It was an example one)
Now, just to get the other two folders going, I still cant get the username/password

Thanks so much for your help

109045 2002-12-27 03:00:00 If you make any changes to the smb.config file (or any config file for any service) you need to restart the service (or use one of the "kill" options). The config files are read only at start up time. Have you read the Samba HOWTO? ;-)

I'm not sure about this user/password thing. I don't like GUIs :D Is it like the normal start up login? "System" type changes will need a root login.

109046 2002-12-27 06:54:00 Actually, I didnt need to restart the service.

I got it going, changed the folder's and stuff like that, but I had to remember to change the folder permissions and stuff like that.

Its now working, and hopefully I should be able to re-do it next time!

Thanks for all you help.

One last question, how do I get my laptops IP Address?

Cheers

109047 2002-12-27 07:56:00 I use PROFTPD on mandrake.

The default settings let you log in with your normal username/password to access your users home directory.

109048 2002-12-28 01:18:00 ifconfig will tell you your IP address. Do "man ifconfig" to see the other things you can do with ifconfig. Graham L (2)
109049 2002-12-28 04:01:00 Thanks guys for all youre help, Graham L - Thankyou very much, and ifconfig is just what I need.

I've got it all going nicely now, but Im hoping that I wont have to re-do it for a wee while.

Im off to explore the wild new world of Linux, and I can sympathyze with .Clueless changing his name to that because of his experiences with Linux. ;)

Thanks again
