108865 2002-12-25 22:06:00 Use Partition Magic 8 and you can change them at any stage. If you dont like it just change them around again.

Fors:

If one partition craps out you only lose what is on it not the whole lot. You can keep stuff seperate. With XP you could have one partition for each user.

Cons:
Takes up a little bit extra memory for each one but not noticable. Cant think of any others.

Make the sizes as big as you think.

Note: You should backup before changing partitons but having said that PQMagic has only failed me once and that was my own fault with a very early version of it.

108866 2002-12-25 22:27:00 I'm with Heather. It pointless having programs on a separate partition to windows as if you reformat the windows partition the programs are mostly 'gone' to. I have an 8 gig drive with everything but data. That is on a separate 4 gig drive. wotz (335)

not many programs are like that. office is proberly the worse for it as you have to delete it all before installing. 90% of my programs are on a seperate partition and most don't require reinstalling.

108868 2002-12-26 01:29:00 My husband had a larger hard drive than I have and runs things like Age of Empire. I think these were installed on the 2nd partition (a reformat once caused howls of pain and outrage as he lost his high scores. He might still have to reinstall the game but at least he won't lose his scores) Heather P (163)

For installing Win XP on a new hard drive you just need to insert the Win XP installation disk into the CD drive and it will walk you through the process of partitioning the hard drive. No need for boot disks etc as long as the bios is set to boot off the CD drive.
