Cheers

I've never used it, but XSolutions offer a modified version of Mandrake 7 that supposedly works very well on a 486 (is optimised to run on a 486). I think they quoted me something like $5-$10 to send a copy out to me.

109197 2002-12-27 01:07:00 Most of the modern distributions use lots of disk. When I wanted to set up a 486DX33 wioth a 330MB disk, I gave up on RH7.2 because it filled the disk, even when told not to install a lot of stuff. I just went back to an early Slackware (and installed it from the SCSI tape I wanted the machine to drive). RedHat 5.2, 6.2, (or 4.2) wou;ld be good bets for a small distribution. You can often borrow a library book with a CD which has one of these. (Canterbury Public Library has these, and you could get a book oin Interloan).

The CPU is not a problem, except that Mandrake (as far as I know) assumes that everyone has Pentiums, and compiles the kernel accordingly. Such a kernel won't run on a 486 (or 386!).
