2002-12-25 21:03:00 | Ive got a few things on the wish list now... Ive switched to RedHat Linux 8.0 on my laptop as previously mentioned to see once and for all if it was the driver that was munting up the display, and godfather, you were right once again. The display is fully sorted, now, theres a few other things I was hoping you might be able to help out with. Firstly, I have a really weird soundcard, but Ive managed to get it to go using a different sound-driver (its using the Advance Logic ALS-007 ) Now, it seems to go okay, provided I set it up to use a lower bit (8 I think) and mono sound in XMMS. Now, it forgets the soundcard setup (Even when I select save this session for suture logins), so: How can I make it remember the soundcard as being an Advance Logic ALS-007 (Coz at the moment it comes up with a few errors on load of KDE). Also, can I make XMMS set those config settings for the MP3 Play back as default (I used the plugin from this months APC mag - Very good :D) Next, Im wanting to setup a FTP from this laptop so that I can transfer files to and from a specific folder ( I've heard setting up SMB is quite hard ), its communicating using a Genius PCMCIA Network card ( using a different driver coz there was none ) and it can ping the other two PC's on the network ( I even learnt that Ctrl + C stops it from pinging! I am getting along well aye.. ) so I just want to figure out how to setup a FTP folder that a new user can transfer to ( The user is not setup on the linux system, only from the doze PC's... Ive seen a FTPD being setup before, so I might remember some parts.. just need a push in the right direction. ) Also, security isnt a major on this laptop, I'm the only one who will use it, nothing private is gonna be kept on it, so even if somebody can help me set it up so that everybody has full access to that FTP folder (But none below it) that'd be awesome. I think that's about all for now, Hope you all had a merry christmas (I just wish Id been able to visit on Christmas Day... :() Cheers Chilling_Silence

With XMMS have you downloaded the MP3 plugin? Redhat doesn't included it with there Dist. You'll have to D/L it from http://www.xmms.org By the Way SMB is really easy to use. You should simply be able to R-click on the folder in Gnome or kde select properties then select Sharing. You might have to enable SMB through the config utils. Or else if you want to move the files to a Win box all you need to is enable file and print sharing share a folder on the HD. then go the laptop and type smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx the IP address of the computer you want ot move the files to and then cut and past them there. (replace xxx.xx..... with the correct IP for the other machine) |

2002-12-25 23:01:00 | you'll need to type the smd://............ stuff into either Gnome or Kde's File Browser. | Falcdragon (919) | |
2002-12-26 02:45:00 | Yeah, As og\f the soundcard, the driver wasnt fully compatible with it coz the soundcard is rather uncommon, but I cot on... C-Media I think. XMMS - Its sorted, see above, I dont need to do it anymore, and as I wrote in my post, I got the MP3 plugin frm the APC CD. Thanks thou, i'll check the site out. SMB - I mite need a little more help with, I think Ive enabled it upon startup. How would I do that thou (Just in case). so Id use the format (On the laptop once SMB sharing is enabled): smb://192.168.0.1/C/ That's the C-Drive share on the ICS enabled PC setup with DHCP for the LAN (running 2K)! | 109037 | 2002-12-26 08:21:00 | Okay, Ive got a folder on the Desktop I wanna share on the Linux Laptop and on the 2K PC is the C-Drive shared a \\192.168.0.1\C\ (As written in the prvious post) Now, in the Folder Properties on the Laptop, is a Sharing tab, but it looks like its for sharing over the net. I've gone into -Server Tools -Services and found the system services I THINK... What do I need to tick and un-tick to get Samba running? Then, How do I check that it is running? On the laptop, I can ping both the ICS/DHCP PC running 2K (which is 192.168.0.1 ) and also a second PC which is currently 192.168.0.33, So Im wanting to know how to Ping the linux laptop? Also.. One last request, How do I stop the screen turning off after three minutes which is when the Matrix Style Screen saver is supposed to come on!? Many thanks Chilling_Silence

2002-12-26 09:05:00 | Hi Chilling, Some months ago Clueless asked about Samba and Graham and I gave him a few pointers. Samba is a bit more secure than FTP, but it is still a good idea to make some adjustments to your portmapper file (ie Hosts allow and Hosts deny). There are two ways to adjust Samba, one is by using the Swat program and the other is by adjusting the smb.conf file. To enable sharing you need to create a log-in for each user on the other PC's who needs to access the shares. The main prerequisite is to save the original smb.conf as smb.conf.old so that you have a backup of the original file. The explanations included in the conf file will led you through what needs to be altered and what doesn't.

2002-12-27 01:21:00 | FTP uses a user (called ftp!) and has a directory tree starting in /home/ftp/ . There are a few security things about this (like having its own bin and etc directories with very limited things especially passwd). You will probably find Samba easier once you get into it. Have a browse through the HOWTOs. The soundcard settings being lost is probably a result of kudzu running. That's one of those "user-hostile" things like Plug&Play which "knows better".:_| I have killed it. I prefer to set things up and know that they settings won't be changed. If I add or remove hardware, I will know I have done that and make any changes needed.

2002-12-27 02:05:00 | So far Ive got it showing up, in the "Home" workgroup which is what I use, but I cant figure out howto change the laptop name from localhost, which basically is a loopback to itself (Pinging localhost pings 127.0.0.1). How do I change the laptops name? Once that's done it should be sweet, I've found the smb.conf file and modified it enough so it should work as expected. As for kudzu, I've simply switched to a different sound-driver, ESS1868 I think. It seems to run XMMS with good enough quality, so that'll do for now :D And about hardware changes, its a laptop, so at most, itd get a new LAN card, but mine already works fine so why change it? THanks Chilling_Silence

2002-12-27 02:15:00 | To change the hostname, you need to set up the laptop's networking. This involves giving it an IP address, and a hostname. There will be a thing for that in the GUI Control Centre. | Graham L (2) | |
2002-12-27 02:23:00 | Yup, Found it, Changed it to Linuxbox, and now its asking for a username and password, Im not sure what to do. I've found the smbusers.conf file, but its of little help, and also I have no idea what folders and stuff Ive enabled and whatnot. Firstly, could you help out with the password/users thing? Thanks Chilling_Silence BTW, How do I find out the IP address of the linuxbox so I can ping it from my doze PC's?
