| 109968 | 2002-12-30 09:28:00 | Well, Ive done it! I killed my first linux install. It was probably fixable, but Im re-installing now. I tried updating the nVidia drivers, but I should have restarted the PC coz Id been mucking about with some stuff, and when I installed my last rpm (xmms_mp3_playback_plugin ;)) It took ages, lots longer than it should have. Then, installing the nVidia drivers, I waited 30mins for the 1st rpm to install and it didnt... So I restarted and nothing worked.. Sound, Mouse, GUI... So Im just finializing my re-install now. On to the question: Im gonna be having a few mates over tomorrow to watch Black Hawk Down for New Years Eve, and Im gonna hire a DVD to play in my PC, using the TV-Out function. Ive done it several times in doze, no sweat at all, but what about in Linux? Ive got Gnome and also KDE being installed, rather than just KDE... Going for a few flavors. So, What can I use for DVD-Playback, Do I really need to update the display drivers from generic GF4, and how do I get it going out the RCA plug? In doze I simply open up display properties, select settings, and switch it over. Im hoping its just as easy in linux! Thanks Chilling_Silence |

| 109969 | 2002-12-30 10:29:00 | Okay, Have re-installed and all, samba working no sweat. Onto the display drivers... Following instructions provided here: pressf1.pcworld.co.nz I changed it, however, my monitor can only do a refresh rate of 60Hz (I know.. Its next on the replacement list) at a 1024x876 Res. Lowering the res wont help either. I went in and did that and now my screen comes up all garbled. I hit Ctrl+Alt+F4 and it goes into text-mode, and I can find the file (With the backup in a backup sub-folder) but dunno how to work vi enough to change it, and/or how to restore the older file! Can anybody help please!!! |

| 109970 | 2002-12-31 01:46:00 | Don't use vi. :D Try pico or joe. Or if you have mc, run that , and use its internal editor. (joe will give you a help window from Ctrl/K/H --- and remove it with Ctrl/K/H --- and the others give info on the bottom line). To get a backup copy of a file copied over a faulty one, do chmod -w /full/path/to/backup_file cp /full/path/to/backup_file /path/to/the_file That will make the backup file read-only --- always a good idea, and copy it to the proper place. You could use "mv" --- move, but that loses the backup because it actually moves it to the new place (and name). DVD ... don't know. I think there is an org site, though. |

| 109971 | 2002-12-31 03:10:00 | Okay.. Yep, I remember now that DivX came about coz some dudes were trying to get DVD playback on Linux. DeCSS and all that.. Anyways, Ive found a few and Im downloading them now. But what about TV-Out? In Win2K I simply go into Dislpay properties and then Advanced then switch to TV, and confirm that that's what I want to do and its set! Who wants to bet its extremely different in Linux!? Im looking at SourceForge now for some software but want to know if anybody here has done it first off and how? Man! There is so much more to learn.. I think I feel a bit like Chris at time (No offense meant :p :D) |

The links further down to AnandTech-View FAQ, and //librenix.com/?inode=950 look to be worth a look. Sourceforge has the project. Apparently GNU/Linux can't distribute systems set up for this because of the "copyright" problems. (Apparently, it's actually lawyer problems ... no one can afford to fight the studios). You have to do it yourself, but it doesn't look too bad ... a small section added in XF86config. |

I'll add those lines and have a look, I'll also download another proggy from SF for DVD-Playback, my last download got killed half-way thru. I found this: www.digital-digest.com Looks good.
