2003-01-01 07:50:00 | Hi, I've searched and read many messages re Win XP account types but haven't yet struck this particular problem, so apologies if it is a duplicate. I am running Win XP Pro with 4 user accounts set up, one of these being the guest account. This PC is set up as part of a home network with a second machine running Win ME. I need two of the accounts on this XP machine set up with admin privileges and the third with limited account type. The two admin accounts are fine, (apart from some internet connection issues for another day) but as often as I go to 'user accounts' in control panel and change the account type to 'limited' it stubbornly returns back to admin account type as soon as I exit control panel. After I make the change to 'limited' account type, if I click on the 'home' icon, the account appears as a limited account in the list of my 4 user accounts but if I close the user accounts window and reopen through control panel, it reverts to an admin account. I have looked for some 'save this change' type of option to make the account type change stick but can't find anything. Would appreciate any ideas. Regards, Brett

2003-01-01 08:44:00 | I tried to replicate your problem on my machine without success and searching google was a mission. Just a thought. Have you tried creating a brand new account (leave all the others there) and see if that can be changed to Limited. Sorry if this is something you have tried. sam m

This PC is set > up as part of a home network with a second machine > running Win ME . > Just re-read your post . When you say 'guest account' are you saying the default account set by XP or are you referring to a new user . I found this quote "Guest account The guest account is intended for use by someone who has no user account on the computer . There is no password for the guest account, so the user can log on quickly to check e-mail or browse the Internet . A user logged on to the guest account: Cannot install software or hardware, but can access applications that have already been installed on the computer . Cannot change the guest account type . Can change the guest account picture . here . ( . icuii . com/help/55/multi_use_xp . php" target="_blank">www . icuii . com) Not sure if this will help . sam m |

2003-01-01 09:51:00 | Hi Sam, The guest account is the default Guest account with XP. This isn't the account that I am trying to change the permissions for though. Good thought about trying to create a new account with the permissions that I want. I'll post if this works. Thanks for your trouble. Cheers, Brett

2003-01-01 20:07:00 | this is just an idea...you said it's networked with another box. are there 2 of the same user names, one on each box? eg if the ME box has an admin account called BORIS and you are trying to create a limited account on XP called BORIS, there may be some problem. I have no idea if that's true but give it a look. | tango (2697) | |
2003-01-01 21:26:00 | Hi Boris, Thanks for the suggestion but that isn't it. My problem is not with creating an account, it is with changing the permissions of an existing account from admin to limited. The post above from sam_m has given me a viable work around though. I have found that I can create a new account with limited permissins with no problem. This does mean that I have to set all applications and other customisations up again but it is worth it. Thanks Boris and Sam Brett

2003-01-02 20:34:00 | oh yeah sorry, I meant changing the account. there would probably be a problem if there was already an admin with the same name, if that makes any sense. | tango (2697) | |
