I have just got a new 60gb Hardrive, i want to replace my old 8gb hdd (which i will sell)
how should i go about this?
Put in the new as a slave and just copy/paste everything over?.......

Any ideas would be appreciated.
Cheers

110722 2003-01-03 07:39:00 Hi there,
You can't just copy/paste everything over ....

You will either have to reinstall everything or use a programme like norton Ghost to replicate you current drive contents to your new drive ...

If you have had your current install going for a while it might be a nice opportunity to start fresh anyway ...........

110723 2003-01-03 07:48:00 thanks for that.
Thats wot i was after, i program that down it - i wasn't sure if you could get anything that done that sort of thing.
Anyway, where do i get NG? does it cost?
How does it work? do you have to put iit on the blank HDD (whcih doesn't have an OS installed)
cheers

110724 2003-01-03 08:11:00 u, can get them in any shops. not sure about price think it was $120 or $200 odd for NT based like 2000/XP.
u connect the hard drive *new*
then u can image the old drive to another drive (the new one)
and reboot and reconnect the new drive as c:

110725 2003-01-03 08:20:00 NG is $175 approx, for a version that runs on all including XP godfather (25)
110726 2003-01-03 09:00:00 I know Maxtor have a program that you stick on a floppy disk that will format your new drive and then copy everything over. Other drive manufacturers probably have the same thing. I don't know if it does NTFS though, but I was using it about 2 years ago so its probably changed by now. segfault (655)
110727 2003-01-03 09:14:00 virtually all hd manafactures have their own program which will "ghost" everything over to the new drive and is free, nortons ghost has heepas more optoins but cost $$$ tweak'e (174)
110728 2003-01-03 10:58:00 Try looking at [www.pcguide.com where you will find info about 2 progs xxcopy and Drive Copy which are said to do drive-to-drive copying including Windows installation. Robin S_ (86)
110729 2003-01-03 19:11:00 ok,
thanks
i'll think i'll lokk around and go find a 'free' program instead, i don't think i want to pay $175 for a program i'll only use once.
Thanks tho

110730 2003-01-03 21:59:00 even if u reimage an HDD to another and it works....
fine, but
Microsoft will require u to reactivate ur software(s). this is by experience. once u start office again that stupid dialogue box will appear again or else lock u out after 50 uses. Not sure about windows since win2k (i am running) does not have the feature. i know XP does, so suppose the same applies to it.
