110507 2003-01-02 09:21:00 How much HDD space do you have , and what are the other specs of your machine?

Theres more than just brands
I'm running SuSE8.. 7 CD's, but so far Gaim, an ICQ clone is the only thing i have installed from somewhere othere than the CDs...

Before telling you how long the piece of string should be, you best tell us what color you want!!!!

You could run SuSE.. even i could get it running and i'm clueless, mandrake and redhat are popular, probably more so, i'd wait till you get some more opinion

110510 2003-01-02 09:33:00 I could send you Mandrake 8.2 which is a good newbie distro. I don't have the latest (9.0) which was on a recent APC mag (November I think). Dolby Digital (160)
110511 2003-01-02 09:43:00 Can you run a Win modem with Mandrake or do you have to get a hardware one. Baldy (26)
110512 2003-01-02 09:53:00 Baldy, generally speaking, winmodems don't work in Linux. Though now that is not always the case.

It's just that generally the manufacturer does not provide drivers, enthusiasts write the drivers themselves.

Depends. Some are supported, many are not. Here is a good starting point http://www.linmodems.org/

110514 2003-01-02 11:43:00 Baldy,
I'm running Mandrake 9 with a Conexant winmodem right now. Some winmodems are supported in Linux but not directly. That is to say, after installing Mandrake my winmodem was not recognised :( but I found a driver for it here (www.mbsi.ca). I find I have no problems with its performance and it works just the same as it does in Windows 98SE (maybe even better ;)).

110515 2003-01-03 00:53:00 Yes, Linmodems are sorta support for some types.

Im on RedHat 8.0 and Higly reccommend it, possibly over Mandrake 9. The installer for M9 didnt seem wuite so friendly, and the interface has been nicely re-vamped in RedHat 8. I didnt really get much of a chance to use Mandrake 9, but if in my tampering I somehow screw up my laptop setup, then I'll be putting on Mandrake.

RedHat has a larger user base, and it comes with enough to keep ya happy, office suites and stuff. Expect an install + KOffice to be just under 2 gigs. I decided not to install any office stuff and just use mine for browsing and media playback, and I've got myself a 1.3 gig install.

I have the 3CD set for both the most recent versions. Alrenatively, check out linux-shop.co.nz.
However, I dont mind sending either to you :-) I would say go with RedHat though :-)
