110375 2003-01-01 20:45:00 Am using Windows 98SE

Ran Ad-Aware yesterday afternoon after using some search engines looking for something in particular. Came up with several items. mainly xupiter and gator. Cleaned them off and all seemed well.

This morning at start up I got BSOD with message 0028:C166392A Hit any key and load up started to continue them another BSOD with message 0028:0168DBOA pressed key and away we went.

Checked msconfig and found I had aquired C:\Program Files\Xupiter\XT Cfg Loader.exe

Downloaded programs showed something "unknown" and to do with gator.

Looked in registry and found "gotobar" which I don't remember seeing before.

I use Pcillin and notice that although I have it ticked in msconfig the "slash" doesn't appear on task bar as usual at start up.

I also have AVG

Hope this is enough information and is clear enough.

I did notice at one point during my travels over the internet I had temporarily a bar at the top of the screen underneath the usual one I have.

110376 2003-01-01 21:32:00 Uninstall from Xupiter Here ( . xupiter . com/uninstall/" target="_blank">www . xupiter . com)

It can be removed with Ad-aware but you must have the current version
and you must also download and install the newest reference file

Earlier reference files will not detect Xupiter

110377 2003-01-01 22:22:00 try going to google and putting in

fatal exception+0028:C166392A

then try
fatal exception+0028:0168DBOA

You will be amazed, I found something on my fatal exception hexadecimal number, not that the results were worth much.

110378 2003-01-02 04:10:00 Thanks for that Jim B . Went to the uninstall and got a window with small message saying "Uninstall starting, please close this window" So I guess that takes care of Xupiter . Any idea just what it is anyway?

Xupiter is still showing up on msconfig - startup . How do you delete it from there .

Tried the Google search E . ric and just got a nil result .

Anyway, whatever the problem it seems to be fixed and Computer starts ok now again .

110379 2003-01-02 04:39:00 Hi Iris, hate to tell you this, but you will still have Xupiter hiding on your machine. That uninstall you did only disabled the toolbar (as you have already noticed that it is still showing on startup)

Did you run Adaware with the signature file of 042-24.09.2002? You will probably have to manually removed this program. Instructions and further information can be found here (home1.gte.net)

Gator is another program that you will have to remove from your system. Instructions are also found on the above link.

To prevent further acquistions of the above program(s) you should have a look at your IE security settings and crank the settings up a bit. Again a guide is given in the above link (got to love these one-link does all sites :D )

The Gotobar listing you saw in the registry is legit and not spyware.

110380 2003-01-02 04:49:00 Xupiter is a browser plug-in that gets installed automatically on your computer when you visit certain web sites . There is no comprehensive list of dangerous web sites of which I am aware . A pop up ad can also install Xupiter on your computer .

Xupiter is downloaded to your computer as an Active-X control . An Active-X control is a small program or "applet" that lives on the Internet .

Once installed on your computer, Xupiter launches annoying pop up / pop under ads when you surf the net . It also periodically hijacks your home page, adds links to your bookmarks, and adds a tool bar to your Internet browser .

Xupiter is a threat to your privacy as it tracks your browsing habits and reports this information to a central ad server .

Xupiter has no removal function, that is, it is not a program that you can remove through the Windows Add / Remove programs function . Anti-virus software cannot detect or remove Xupiter, because it is not a virus .

You might want to download and run http://spybot . eon . net . au/ to remove all traces as Ad-Aware may not be sufficiently up to date to remove it all .

110381 2003-01-02 07:22:00 Thanks JenC and Jim B

The help you both gave was absolutely brilliant and I have (hopefully) successfully worked my way through all the information and am free of xupiter. :D

The web page you posted JenC was really useful and easy to follow. :D
as was the web page you posted JimB

Once again Press F1 has come to my rescue and I can't thank you all enough. :D

Thank heavens there is always someone with the knowledge to fix the problems.

What a way to start the New Year

Thanks again

Iris :D
