111011 2003-01-05 07:46:00 As you know, I don't have Win ME but I found this on the web:

timeout=20
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S="Windows ME"
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Pro" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

Don't know if it will work, but hey! you live dangerously anyway. :p :D

Microsoft have a page (support.microsoft.com) on the Purpose of the BOOT.INI File in Windows 2000 or Windows NT that explains the data in that file.

[b]Edit/ Just received an email notification of Merlin's post but will still go ahead with posting this in case it might be worth trying.

"Fluffing around..."!! :p

111012 2003-01-05 08:20:00 Baldy - thanks for the link and the info to expose those hidden system files .

Merlin - looked at your idea of using a boot disk and sys c: but I have quite a bit of work to catch up on so I will file it away for a day when I have time to spare and try it out, right now I cannot afford to entertain the idea of reinstalling Windows should the sys c: plan fail to work .

Susan - also thanks to you for your input in editing the boot . ini file . I do live dangerously at times but I get paid to do that .

Main thing right now is that I have successfully increased the timeout from 1 sec to 20 sec which if nothing else allows my better half to access the computer without getting her bra all twisted .

Help much appreciated evryone .

Cheers

111013 2003-01-05 14:44:00 Have you tried fdisk /mbr from a win me boot disk yet. When you tried to install xp it wrote to the mbr so it needs overwriting with the me mbr. Fluffing around with boot.ini is just fluffing around with the failed xp install. mikebartnz (21)
111014 2003-01-05 22:41:00 Merlin, you are indeed a wizard, I owe you a new wand.

Got everything up to date, backed up in case and then tried your
A:/sys c: thingee and it worked a treat.

Boots up perfectly straight into WinME without any prompts, it has totally forgotten about XP.

Your time and know how is much appreciated.

Same to Susan B, MikeB, ChillingSilence and everyone else that replied and put forward there combined know how, much appreciated the assistance.

Cheers All. Happy Computing.
