WHile terry's way is ok, it isn't the most ideal way to have your network set up

110844 2003-01-04 02:39:00 I agree with what Terry Porrit put..
Use NetBeui for the computers to talk to eachother and TCP/IP for the internet sharing, that's how I do it at home.. It's easy enough to do, just follow my above instructions (once more - sorry) and install NetBEUI after installing TCP/IP and then reboot...

ALSO:
1 - Specify IP Addresses for the computers
2 - are you running ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the host, because if you are then this will help:
On the client machine, go into Network under the control panel, click on TCP/IP> *NIC NAME* and click properties:
Under the IP Addresses tab specify static IP Addresses
Under the gateway tab add a new gateway using your HOST machines IP

Under the DNS Config. tab:
enable DNS
Host = Host Computers name (case sensitive)
Domain = leave blank, unless using a network domain
DNS Server Search Order = IP Address of Host Machine

and that should set you up for Internet Sharing, and fix your network problems

110845 2003-01-04 02:39:00 read this file (pages.quicksilver.net.nz)

This link will take you to a pdf i used when i first learnt how to do networks. It is a step by step and is fail safe. None of this stick Netbeui here, and selotape it together there.

110846 2003-01-04 02:40:00 I'm on it now roofus at dangeroo0@hotmail.comblahblah without the blah blah. Danger (287)
110847 2003-01-04 02:42:00 I would be very pleased roofus if you could tell me the best arrangement. What I did was what I found worked after a lot of trouble, but I'm sure there must be various other ways too. If there is a better way I'd like to give that a go also, thanks :)

To install Dial-Up Adapter:
Control Panel-Network-Add-highlight Adapter-Add-scroll down to Microsoft-highlight. In right pane will be DialUp Adapter, highlight, click OK.

110848 2003-01-04 02:43:00 ah what a mere, still saying that you don't have msn, and apparntly i just sent you an email telling you about how great it is.

have a look at that pdf i posted, it'll help heaps.
Netbeui is good to use internally as it stops hackers, however it CAN be very problematic at times,
All the methods mention so far in this thread are ok for multiple PC's but yours is 2 pc's so you don't need all this dns and dynamic addressing crap

110849 2003-01-04 02:44:00 Have a look at the PDF terry. this will give you a pure TCP/IP network.
no problems etc.

110850 2003-01-04 03:03:00 Hmm, I think my way is better :)
There is a potential or theoretical security risk if you have File and Printer Sharing bound to TCP/IP. (At least according to Steve Gibson, who has a good write up on network bindings, and Im a bit paranoic too!)

I think whilst in strife mode I tried what was in that PDF more or less, but in the end it appeared to be having Dial up Adapter pre-installed that was causing the problems. Once that was added last of all from a fresh install of all components, then the network worked.

110851 2003-01-04 03:25:00 Yea there is if you also bind it to your network card, but if you don't bind your F&P sharing to the internets TCP/IP stack then your fine roofus (483)
110852 2003-01-04 07:40:00 Thanks everyne for your help, espeacially roofus. After 11.5 hours I finally have a network up and running. I'm sure I could tweak it abit with everyones advice, least I can set a restore point now and play around with it. In future if anyone ever has any problems with their network I will only say good luck, and "FIREWALL"!!! Danger (287)
