I have searched high and low on my computer, and I have no sign of a boot.ini file either. My WinME came preinstalled, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

111002 2003-01-04 21:16:00 Sus, I would be interested in at least considering/looking into the idea. Just a hassle having only about 2 seconds to arrow down to get WinME. duckyduck (197)
111003 2003-01-04 21:25:00 Baldy has Win ME --- hey Baldy!! :D Can you open your boot.ini with Notepad and copy and paste the contents of that file here for Ducky please? Thanks! :-) Susan B (19)
111004 2003-01-04 21:27:00 Ooops!!! :8} Didn't see Baldy's reply up there! oh the shame!!

Hmmm, who else has Win ME???

111005 2003-01-04 21:40:00 It appears that with WinME you cannot see the boot.ini file even if you select show all system files (I cannot find mine either).

But apparently you can access and edit the boot.ini file from MS-DOS by using the startup boot floppy.

Thank You It helped a lot!

I just went to DOS Prompt and said EDIT BOOT.INI and it worked! I could edit it! I did not Edit it exactly like you said but I got it to work!!

The reason one cannot see the Boot.INI is becuase it is a system file and system files are always hidden even if you Unhide all files from My Computer.

The only way to actually see them is making them non-system and you can do this by using the ATTRIB function in DOS.

kamsa what part of this did you not understand ??
click on my computer open C drive at the top click on tools / folder options / view then check the box show all files and just under that uncheck the box hide all system files hit apply then back in the C drive there will be a file named boot.ini

The above info is wrong, you can "unhide" system by following the directions posted above from within windows.
the ATTRIB only "unhides" them from inside DOS. It does not change the way Windows see them.

dang it just open up a dos prompt and make sure that you are at c:\>
then type attrib -s -h -r boot.ini

111008 2003-01-05 04:42:00 [boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

Baldy, looks like you might have hit it on the head so to speak, you are right, you have to go one tick more than just selecting the hidden folders, ok, done that and I have copied and pasted as above the contents of what should be the boot . ini file .

timeout=1, I assume this is the setting for the time the option to pick between XP and ME stays visible on the screen ?

WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" - now I assume this is the default operating system so if I change this line to read
WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows ME" would that be right? and if so is there a gap between windows and ME or all one word? unless you want to copy and paste the end result of yours for me to follow off ?

Cheers

111009 2003-01-05 06:00:00 Baldy, ok, I was feeling reckless . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I located the boot . ini file and I have successfully increased the timeout from the 1 second to 20 seconds but I want to now get either WindowME to display as the first choice or better still the only choice . So now this is what it looks like . . . .

[boot loader]
timeout=20
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

How would you or someone else suggest that this be edited so XP is the second choice or there is only one choice being Microsoft Windows which equals WinME in this case .

I gambled and tried changing Microsoft Windows XP Professional to Microsoft Windows which gives me two options both named the same on the boot up, the first which was a replacement for XP is a dead link so we still need to arrow down to the Microsoft Windows .

Anyone want to advise how to edit the above boot . ini so Microsoft Windows (WinME) is the default choice or only choice ?

Cheers All .

111010 2003-01-05 07:40:00 From your posts:
You had Windows Me installed.
You attempted to install XP.
You were unsuccessful.
You have a Boot Options Menu which defaults to a non-existent XP operating system.
You still have Windows Me installed.

Inferred from your posts:
Windows Me is the only operating system installed. No other operating systems are installed on the computer.

Also inferred from your posts:
You want to be able to start your computer and boot into Windows like you could before the attempted installs.

Microsoft might be omniprescient but there is still an element of truth in what they do and say.
Removing Windows NT from a Windows 95/98 Dual-Boot Installation (support.microsoft.com)
The method is recommended for Windows 2000 which forms the basis for XP.

Of course you can continue fluffing around.
