2003-01-04 01:25:00 | I've just been through all this, though admit I didnt read the FAQ :) What I found was that if Dial up Adapter was already installed, as it was for both my computers , then I couldnt get the TCP/IP protocoll to work between the 2 comps, no matter how carefully I followed 'standard' recipes for setting up a network and assigning addresses etc, etc. After endless strife, I found the answer was to remove everything then re-install the network adapter, then TCP/IP for the network adapter, then Netbeui then File and Printer Sharing. I then set up all the bindings. I use Netbeui for File and Printer sharing, the TCP/IP protocoll is not bound to anything and NetBios is disabled. Initially I let Win98SE find the IP address and subnet mask by checking the Find IP address automatically box, for each computer. Use winipcfg.exe to find the self assigned addresses. I then specified those IP addresses and subnet mask for each computer as fixed addresses, with one computer being designated as a gateway (for the moment that, is until I get ADSL), by putting its IP address in the gateway box of the other computer. I set up Netbeui for file and printer sharing, and only that is bound to Client for Microsoft Networks, and to File and Printer sharing, for best security. So I have 2 independent protocolls working. The acid test is to run Netmeeting between the two computers, if that is ok, then you know your TCP/IP protocoll is working fine; and transfer files via Netbeui at the same time. After I got the TCP/IP working, I re-installed Dial up Adapter as the final step, on each computer, so that they can each dial out. Now Im waiting for ADSL to arrive at our local exchange :)

I did actually get to the stage where my firewalls were asking to allow the packets, so thats progress, but my P3 needed a restore after explorer became unstable so I'm back to the stage where the diagnostic ping works but not to each other. |

2003-01-04 01:44:00 | After configureing network wizard, the PIII now sees the P4 and trys to connect via the modem. I don't want them to connect via the modem tho do I? | Danger (287) | |
2003-01-04 01:52:00 | Hmmm... doesn't see it after a reboot. | Danger (287) | |
2003-01-04 01:54:00 | Nor doe's the diagnostic ping | Danger (287) | |
2003-01-04 01:55:00 | Ho, ho, arent you having fun :) :) | Terry Porritt (14) | |
2003-01-04 02:01:00 | The diagnostic ping (to 127.0.0.1) only checks that you have the protocol working. Because it addresses "localhost" ( the local host --- itself :D ) it doesn't need the network card. So it doesn't use it. So it does not test your ables either. This is the sort of thing that gets worse and worse as you try more things. It's probably best to uninstall all the network stuff, turn the computers off, and start again from scratch. It will be something simple. Just go through the procedures slowly and carefully.

2003-01-04 02:16:00 | Ok. Before I do what you did Terry, how do I reinstall Dial up adapter? | Danger (287) | |
2003-01-04 02:27:00 | Thanks roofus, that would be great. I have just done a sys restore as explorer became unstable, so I was thinking of starting at stage one and following Terrys advice. I just need to get back in control of where I'm at and then I may take up your offer. I'm not worried about spam on my hotmail add as thats all it gets used for any way. I may not be there for awhile but my hotmail msn account is dan--roo0 (double oo zero) at hotmail.com | Danger (287) | |
