110778 2003-01-04 04:32:00 the whole idea of partition is to make it easy to mantain and so you don't lose everything when windows dies. a lot of programs don't require reinstalling, you just have to make short cuts to them. others a simple over the top install will have it all back to where you left off. unforunatly those programs that really hook into windows require removing before you can reinstall it so they are best left on c drive so it gets wiped when you remove windows.

rule of thumb, office, most MS programs, all drivers, firewalls, antivirus need to be on c drive.

110780 2003-01-04 09:44:00 The idea of using MS-DOS is a very good idea. Sorry i can't find out exactly what you type in but I'm pretty sure it's somewhere "from Google".

Just remember that if you do have any partitions at the moment, that you need to delete them first.

110781 2003-01-04 13:06:00 Susan B quite often programs have there own settings not within the registry and by installing them on a separate partition it will retain those settings .
It doesn't matter where office is installed I have never had a problem.
I generally have four partitions OS/Programs/Data/Swap and have found having the swap file on it's own partition very beneficial.

110782 2003-01-04 19:21:00 o yeah - i remeber reading that in a magazine.
they said make a separate Partition for teh swap file.

How do you go about this?
And how big should it be (WIN XP pro)

cheers

110783 2003-01-04 20:23:00 the trouble i've had with office is you can't reinstall it over the top of itself. it has to be removed which is a tad tricky if you have wiped the os. office will work in another partition ok but seeing that it has to be removed its simply easier to keep it with the os.

a swap file partition is nice but it really needs to be the first partition on the disk otherwise it will run slow defeating the whole point of havn't the swap file partition. i prefer to keep it with the os and make it the first file on the hardrive (fastest part of the disk) useing nortons speed disk (not sure if other defrag utilities will do it or not). also putting in a decent minimum swapfile size helps.
