110991 2003-01-04 08:06:00 Ok, the background to this sorry saga is.............

Decided to try out WinXP Pro, went with the dual boot idea WinME/WinXP while.

Anyway about 3/4 of the way through the install of XP it spat the dummy. I decided to call it quits after 3 tries and left it at that. I won't bore you with the details as I formated the partition concerned and will try XP as a stand alone OS on a new computer at a later date as I have work that I need to get done and no more time to spend trying to get this to work.

Now on the startup of the computer there is the option to pick which OS, of course XP is the default choice, it gives you about 2 seconds to arrow down to WinME otherwise it tries to load WinXP which of course is not at there anymore.

Now, I want/need to change the boot order so WinME is the default OS always or change it so that there is a longer time frame in which to arrow down and select WinME.

In WinME I have looked through My Computer > Properties and there are no options there as far as I can see to change this, I have been to WinME > Control Panel > System and no option there. I have searched for boot.ini and anything else starting with boot in WinME C:/ and WinME Windows and can see nothing off hand that would allow the boot up to either default to WinME or to increase the time frame to pick the OS.

Anyone with any idea's. Cheers

110992 2003-01-04 08:17:00 There's a file called Boot.ini on your C:\ Drive...

Change it so that the ME line is up the top of the list.. Should be sweet!

I wouldnt delete the XP entry though.. Just in case :-)

cheers

110994 2003-01-04 09:50:00 Wish it was as simple as locating the file boot.ini, searched all the drives and there is no file of that name. Maybe because WinXP spat the dummy those times and failed to finish loading it has not created the file ?

Thanks anyway, I will just plug along till one day I say to hell with this and format the whole thing.

110995 2003-01-04 09:57:00 Boot.ini should live in the root directory of the C:\ drive

It is usually hidden and system. If you have your view settings not to show hidden or system files then you won't see it.

You will have a boot.ini file.

110997 2003-01-04 13:07:00 I'm with Mike, although I'd use an ME boot disk.
Probably the same but just to be safe....
Done exactly this on several occasions with perfect results.

110998 2003-01-04 13:29:00 Got the wrong OS. Shows that you should read the posts properly. mikebartnz (21)
110999 2003-01-04 19:38:00 I had already thought of hidden folders and they were on view, there is still no boot.ini file in either WinME>C:/ or WinME>C>Windows.

Thanks anyway.

111000 2003-01-04 21:05:00 Would you be able to create a boot.ini yourself and place it in C:\ if someone with Win ME posted the contents of their boot.ini?? There isn't much in that file.... Susan B (19)
