111385 2003-01-06 05:02:00 Computer: Compaq Deskpro 590
OS: Fresh install of Win 95

Problem: Network card will not plug and play (can't use the network port on the motherboard - wrong type of adaptor for network).

I've taken the card out but can't see any brand name on it so don't know which drivers to install.

Any ideas???

111386 2003-01-06 05:39:00 any name/number on the chip used on the lan card? tweak'e (174)
111387 2003-01-06 05:46:00 There are several components on the card. Trouble is I've never studied them to figure out what each component is.

The chip may be the following one:
RTL8029AS
8506901
828C
Taiwan

111389 2003-01-06 06:00:00 Hi, Not all cards are plug &play so manualy detect the card use the "add new hardware" feature in control panel and that should take you through the steps of detecting and seting up your card, it probably would help if you have the drivers and make on hand when you do this. 111390 2003-01-06 06:15:00 Thank you. In the meantime I found an old 3Com card that plugged and played - and, after a couple of hitches have just got the network showing. Thankfully I didn't have to dive into the old box containing cards with jumpers.

I tried to post a few minutes ago to say that I've changed cards but once again my trusty computer crashed. (Setting up the old compaq is an attempt to seperate 2 programs that hate each other. Once I get that going it's back to this one.)

111391 2003-01-07 01:48:00 Isn't "name" stuff nice? Generic cards, particularly "NE2000 compatible", cause problems. Many of them needed to be started from DOS to be told their parameters. Graham L (2)
111392 2003-01-07 01:52:00 I have some myself...
You need an updated driver, even in 98! I havent tried them in ME/2K!

AFAIK, Going to google and looking for NE2000 Compatible Driver Download 95 would bring it up!

3Com are nice, easy PnP cards though mostly! (ISA)

My 2cents worth :-)

Cheers
