111258 2003-01-05 22:11:00 I run a P4 with a XP Home and Win98 dual-boot system. It's only about 4 months old. Recently when I try to start the system up, nothing happens. All lights are on but I can't hear the hard drive starting and nothing appears on the monitor. I have to pull the plug and then try again in order for it to boot properly. Any ideas? Is this possibly a problem with the power supply? Denfinn (1658)
111259 2003-01-05 23:30:00 Do fans run etc?

Power supplies usually provide a "power good" signal, that some motherboards recognise and only allow boot-up if its present. It could be a timing issue, or if a "home built" PC some incompatability. Has it always done this?

111260 2003-01-06 00:07:00 hey.

i had this same prob with my custom built machine too, it worked out that something was wrong with the motherboard, it was holding back the power from the PSU not allowing it to get to anything like the Hard Drive or Cd ROM, i ended up taking it back and getting it replceed, try getting a volt-e-meter and checking the plugs going out to the HDD and CD-ROM on the PSU when it is turned on, u should be getting something like 12 v comming through on one side and 5v comming through on the other, even if it is slightly off, like mine i was only getting 11.84 volts, but that was still enough for it not to boot! the PSU was fine, becuase it was tryed with another PSU as well

Yes the fans work. After ringing the supplier I am told that this sounds like an initialization problem which can be caused by a number of things such as the inter-relation between a number of different brands of components in many systems offered. I was told to monitor the frequency and report back. I must say that the supplier was very helpful and was quite willing to immediately look at the PC but isolating the cause may take considerable time and it would be better at this stage to note if this is on the increase or whatever.

The PC is 4 months old but this problem has only just started to happen in the last four days or so - also does not happen every time.

does this sound reasonable - do you or anybody else have additional helpful suggestions.

111262 2003-01-06 04:19:00 Try unplugging and replugging all the cables. :D Is the lever on the CPU socket latched firmly? :D Is the battery still alive? :D Graham L (2)
