111281 2003-01-05 21:24:00 I am looking at buying a CD writer. Is the listed below a good buy? I am looking at getting it.

Aopen 48x12x50x CRW4850 IDE CDRW + Nero Burning Software + Justlink $99 (excluding GST)

What brands do you recomend?

I found this with pricespy.co.nz.

111282 2003-01-05 21:41:00 Sounds good to me :D Aopen seem to be a trustworthy brand! Chilling_Silence (9)
111283 2003-01-05 22:21:00 I fully recommend the Benq 40x 12x 48x available for $95+GST from the same shop (DTC).

I am not very sure about the Aopen but with the speed been 48x 12x 50x, it doesn't seem right to me! But I'm not at all putting you off buying this. At the end of the day, you might of brought something that you will treasure! (if you are a computer freak like most people here of course!)

The brand Benq comes from the Taiwanese brand of Acer, which if quite popular internationally. But it is not made, like most people think, in China. It says on the box that it was manufactured in Malaysia.

However, having recommended something I own myself is not always accurate. I also strongly recommend the Ricoh which is slowing slipping out of the New Zealand market due to the "higher" price many people are unwilling to pay for its Japanese quility. The speed are usually bit slower, but not slow enough to make a very big difference. The quility is a true A+.

Hope my advice will help, good luck hunting,

111284 2003-01-05 23:31:00 I just bought a samsung 40x,12x,40x from ETC Computers.
The reason I went for this brand over the Benq brand was because the samsung model has an 8Meg buffer, as opposed to Benq's 2Meg. So that makes things a bit more stable when burning.

Agreed, although with a fast enough PC/Enough RAM, That's not really a worry :-)

111287 2003-01-06 01:41:00 Yes, I agree with all your comments, but just to let you know, Samsung is a bit new to the computer market.

Aopen is a bit noisy like dagon said.

111288 2003-01-06 01:52:00 I've been using a Aopen 40-12-48 for a few months now with no problems. Nero supports the "Just Link & Just Speed" options and works well with this CDRW. Go for it.

111289 2003-01-06 01:55:00 I can also reccommend Nero and Justlink!

Nero is IMHO the better, but this has been up for debate and I think the conclusion is whatever's bundled :-)

Justlink is great in that it stops buffer-underrun errors. Since getting my Ricoh drive with it, I haven't coasted once, even across a 10MBPS network! (I have since gone to 100MBPS so I can burn at full speeds without a worry!)

I'd agree and say go for it!

Funny that SY.
Samsung has been around since Jan 13th 1969 and was making computer components ever before Aopen (1996) Acer (1976) BenQ (2001) were founded. Samsung are defineately NOT new to the computer market. They make excellent, high quality electronics.
