111873 2003-01-08 02:23:00 At 50 - 75 Metres I would recommend cable.
At 0 - 15 Metres I would consider Wireless.

I have used this technology when working in Sydney. It had big problems if there was an internal wall between the cards.

Directional high-gain antennae are not an option for real world networking in a house or small business, as you need to be tethered by the antenna cable. May as well use Cat 5 in that case.

Most state the max distance but gloss over the fact that almost no data can be transferred at that distance.

111874 2003-01-08 02:25:00 Why not just buy some extra cable at that small distance?

What about from one end of the house to the other? I take it that its not a really viable option for many at this stage?

Who would find it useful?

90% of the time the laptops just stayed with the cat5 because it was quicker and more reliable.

On reflection (damn - another pun) we have decided to can the idea as perhaps something just too difficult and therefore not worth the effort, would not have cost anything though, as our employer has massive resources, which I am sure we could borrow short term. :-)

Need a challenge in this field though.

111877 2003-01-13 05:07:00 There was an article in one of the Australian PC magazines about some people in a remote or near-remote area building their own aerials out of metal dishes, tin cans, stuff like that, and using them to make one big wireless network, but that was in the same town...

There was also something about them being able to set up their own ISP or something, can't remember.
