I have a desktop PC.

I tend to be a bit lazy when I put cards in and out.

Do you think it is important to put a metal tabs back in to cover the open holes.

Does it affect the performance of the machine etc ?

1326675 2013-02-05 02:11:00 It's more about the flow of air in the chassis for cooling than keeping dust out. Alex B (15479)
1326676 2013-02-05 02:24:00 Man, always keep the metal tabs on, leaving them off means the capacitors leak charge into the surrounding metal. It can give you a nasty shock.

In all honesty it's not going to do diddly squat other than keep dust/debris out in most consumer cases. Maybe in a high performance style case or one with a special air flow design it *might* cause circulation problems but I doubt it, having a card in there would mean that such a cooling design would be ineffective anyway so it's unlikely to hamper (or boost) performance... except for those caps man, they'll get ya one day ;)

1326678 2013-02-05 03:11:00 Good to put the covers back on if you want to keep rodents out as well. Had a computer in a mechanical repair workshop once and it stopped working one day, pulled it out and a mouse had made a nest in it - smelt pretty bad also with the amount of mouse poo and pee everywhere. Would have thought the hole was to small for a mouse, but the proof was all there. Iantech (16386)

Have seen this myself, the mouse pee ate the tracks off the mobo and killed it.
