1326180 2013-02-02 09:03:00 While doing some prep work with a Windows 8 VBox image some updates downloaded and when I went to logout the screen said "Windows update - your PC will restart in 2 days to complete updates" !!!! johnd (85)
1326181 2013-02-02 09:14:00 This is quite a normal message for Windows 8.

In earlier editions of windows when they updated, some updates required a restart to install, the message more or less said you have to do it "now"

( as quoted on MS's site)

"This is a new option in Windows 8. This is a reminder which tells you that in order to complete the installation of some important updates, Windows need to restart".

Meaning the updates are not so "forceful /pushy ",the message is simply saying it will automatically reboot your computer in two days unless you do it yourself beforehand.

In all honesty one reason I do like Linux (PCLinuxOS) is I can update everything on my PC and unless I update the kernal I do not even have to reboot the PC.
I remember installing MS Office Small Business Edition and it went through seven reboots. Pathetic.

1326183 2013-02-02 09:30:00 OK - understood. At first sight the wording is a little odd. johnd (85)
1326184 2013-02-02 20:13:00 At second sight, the wording is still a bit odd.

Is MS contracting their programming work out to China now as well?

1326185 2013-02-02 21:00:00 At the moment some updates insist you restart "NOW", Every OS does it - I put in Linux Mint the other day, after installing 145 updates it insisted a restart there was only one option - DO IT, wouldn't let me do anything else.

This article explains it more (www.pcmag.com) Some people at the moment never turn off or reboot their computer then wonder why its playing up  Could be the updates wanting a reboot.

could you please give us some feedback about what you find odd in the wording

Windows 8 has been through the most amount of testing of any software product ever, but I'd love to follow up and understand whats confusing or odd in that wording

Look that's great that you can update your Linux distro with no reboots, but Windows is different, it is very very challenging to update files that are in use and there are lots of files/IE/explorer and core DLLs that re in use

Not sure if this is your experience with Windows XP, which is now 12 years old, things are much better in Windows 7 and even better again in Windows 8

and if installing Office needs 7 reboots something is wrong

1326188 2013-02-04 08:25:00 "Windows update - your PC will restart in 2 days to complete updates" to me meant that in 2 days time the OS would reboot and then carry on with the updates.
Better = " If you do not shut your PC down within 2 days, an automatic restart will complete the updates".
Having had it explained to be, the wording seems OK.

1326189 2013-02-04 08:54:00 .... but I guess the issue is that it says "will restart" which is not necessarily true. johnd (85)
