| 1301275 | 2012-09-16 06:02:00 | Hmm... some quite notable things ocurred in 1957, but some unknown American pop group that I hadn't heard of then and haven't heard of since or now, was not one them.... Not surprising really as I never did listen to pop music, I think I was vaguely aware of some character call Bill Haley who gave his name to a comet ? :banana, and before that there was a deaf Johnny called Ray who was always crying and made the Bobbysoxers scream and cry :crying The year before Louis Armstrong had toured the UK and appeared at the Birmingham Town Hall, backed by the local New Orleans jazz band from The Midland Jazz Club led by Bobby Pratt on cornet. In 1957 I first met a larger than life character by the name of Capt. Ron Hovenden RN Retired, owner of a 1949 Vincent B Rapide that was continuously upgraded by the Stevenage factory and eventually upgraded to Series C, and friend of Vincent designer Phil Irving who I met when he stayed at Rons. So I went and bought a 1953 Rapide from Tom Somerton down in Old Hill. Also that year I met the future Mrs P, eventually in a few years the Vincent lost out, but it was not long before the Black Shadow arrived. |

The Diamonds I have never heard of, although the noise they made was kind of familiar. Damn you Cicero, I will now have that tune echoing around my head for the rest of the day. Liked the Vincent story Terry. I learned to ride on a Norton Dominator, which I thought was the last thing in bikes. Flatmate in Wanganui had a Manx which he used to race on Cemetery Circuit day, but wouldn't let me near it!! |
