1300081 2012-09-10 23:16:00 Dear Desperate Heart:

I'm gonna try Ubuntu 12 . 10 . Should I have myself committed to an institution?

PS: I live in Montana .

1300082 2012-09-10 23:20:00 Ubuntu is definitely for the committed. ;)
Try PCLinuxOS, it makes whites whiter and coloureds brighter; your whole wash will have new bounce and verve.

Not initially, possibly after you've tried to use it for a while .

Actually it's fairly easy to install, picks up most hardware automatically, and does basic tasks Like E-mail and browsing without any hassles .
Where it get's difficult is if you have unrecognised hardware or want to use less common or windows only applications .

Maybe also consider Linux Mint, I'm not a linux guru by any stretch and find it a little daunting sometimes . Mint is an easier transition for me because it looks and feels more like windows, even silly things like having the minimise/maximise/close buttons on the same side of the window as I'm used to .

As a gamer I'd never commit to Linux as my only OS, but I am trying to use it on my netbook as a free alternative to windows .

1300085 2012-09-10 23:59:00 Yeah I'm a fan of Mint, comes with more things supported "out of the box". Try here for downloads: www.linuxmint.com

1300087 2012-09-11 00:18:00 I'm gonna stick it in an old Dell 500. I'm not gonna try a dual boot ever again. SurferJoe46 (51)

Can't read those at work, our corporate filters don't like anything game related. However given that windows is the dominant OS for PC's and it's already a smaller market than consoles for gaming I can't see the games developers spending too much time developing for Linux any time soon. A lot of games do eventually get made to work, but it's often a lot more hassle than using windows and a long way behind the windows release.

For PC gaming windows is still the main OS to have, it seems more likely the console market will kill it than Linux will.

1300089 2012-09-11 02:08:00 I'm not so sure personally. It's the #1 request whenever you see anything on Kickstarter etc, is "Will there be a Linux port?"
Add to the fact that in the two benchmarks they've released thus far they saw better performance out of OpenGL on Linux than they did with DirectX on Windows, and from what the Valve guys have been writing they're pretty damn excited about where it can go!

I'll quote it for you here ;)
steamforlinux.com

As Gabe Newell has reported at the Casual Connect Conference in Seattle, Valve wants to bring as many Steam games as possible to Linux. The first game is going to be Left 4 Dead 2, which is already has been tested on Ubuntu for some time now. However, the number of frames per second in the game was very low in the past. So the Linux team at Valve initially reported 6 FPS running the game on Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit when using the following hardware:

Intel Core i7 3930k
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680
32 GB RAM
In comparison to Ubuntu, the game ran with 270.6 FPS on Windows 7 using Direct3D drivers.
To solve this problem the team has accomplished the following enhancements:

Modifying the game to work bettter with the Linux kernel
Improving the OpenGL performance of the game
Optimization of the graphics drivers
After performing these modifications, the speed of the game increased to 315 FPS on Ubuntu and has even overhauled Windows 7 with DirectX.

Take from that what you will, granted they mention nothing about advanced features, which version of DirectX and other things, but you get the general gist of things that they are *very* excited about it! I for one, am too :D

1300090 2012-09-11 23:54:00 I just installed ubuntu on a sempron 2400+ I found in the cupboard. It was disgustingly easy and it's apparently all fully functional.
After all the software and hardware issues I've had over the years I'm almost annoyed that throwing some random parts into an old box and installing linux on it went so smoothly. I will say though, Ubuntu is fairly slow on this hardware(768MB RAM, 20GB IDE HDD) with a bit of "click and wait" going on. Although linux is known for working well on slower machines a modern distro with a full desktop GUI on top of it is still getting beyond some slower machines capabilities.
