1300778 2012-09-14 00:01:00 I've avoided apple, although the iPad did tempt me . It's not because I don't like them, I think they make very nice hardware and all their products integrate very well . I suspect the end user experience on a apple or android device is more about preference than any clear advantage either way . I think they are overpriced for the hardware specs and have been for a very long time though .

What kills it for me is both a strength and weakness of apple, its closed and locked down nature . The tight control of the hardware and software enables them to ensure a good user experience and avoid compatibilty issues etc, but it also prevents people from using the device in any way apple doesn't intend .

One example for me, I have all my music ripped and stored on my PC in both MP3 and WMA lossless format . On my android devices I can simply copy these files across and play them with any one of a number of freely available apps, no software required . If I want to do the same with an iProduct I must install iTunes, import my library across, then export or sync them with whatever device I have .

I'm sure it all works but it seems to me like jumping through hoops on my PC in order to use my phone . I want the choice to install software on my PC, not be forced into it as the only approved method . I don't use the library function on any windows based player either, I prefer to manage my files myself with explorer .

1300779 2012-09-14 00:13:00 The new camera on the iPhone 5 is better than any camera on any mobile phone, I am sure of that much. It's not all about the megapixels.
From what I have heard Nokia has the best phone camera on one of their models but who really cares until they can perform as well as a DSLR.

1300781 2012-09-14 00:21:00 From 'Good Morning Silicon Valley' ------------

The specific feature that seemed to cause the most eyebrow-knitting was the new Lightning connector:

Why no wireless charging?
Why no Thunderbolt?
Why is the adapter so (freeking)* expensive?

* - an inside, unspoken, but fully-implied exasperational word .

The Wall Street Journal interviewed those with a vested interest in “the de rigueur dangling accessories of sound systems and workout equipment,” including a hotel executive ------------ (“Oh, God,” he said) and he's a Radio $hack franchisee

(“For dealers of after-the-fact-is-out electronics, it $ will $ be $ a $ good $ thing . ”) Emphasis mine .

Eyebrows were unknit for the hands-on session . “Incredibly sleek, and exceptionally light … (but) still a sturdy and solid-feeling device,” said the Verge’s Joshua Topolsky .

Tweeted tech journalist Ryan Block, “Great . Use the iPhone 5 for ten minutes and now my iPhone 4S feels tiny, fat and ugly .

(At 112 grams, the iPhone 5 weighs as much as a stick of butter . “Stick of butter” is also the size reference commonly used in describing newborn giant pandas, but they might be denser than the iPhone . )

The tech press then turned practical, operating on the assumption you’d want one .
Can I keep my AT&T unlimited plan? (Yes . )
Am I eligible for upgrade pricing? (There’s a quick way to find out . )
How do I return this 4S I just bought? (Oops!)

And by the end of the day, there was the step-back, the head-cocking and chin-stroking .

The Merc’s Troy Wolverton sees Apple “falling further and further behind” its phone-making rivals . “Call me jaded,” he said, “but none of those features is terribly exciting .

Mat Honan at Wired’s Gadget Lab declared the new product ”boring and amazing“: “The iPhone 5 can simultaneously be the best phone on the market and really, really boring . … Apple has little reason to shake things up once it has a product really nailed down .

If we’re bored, Honan added, that’s on us, not on Apple . Tech Crunch’s MG Siegler took a similar tack (in an article that borrowed the language of the warring-magicians movie ”The Prestige,” which I do recommend, and not only for David Bowie as Nikola Tesla): ”Just because you’ve seen a show before, it doesn’t actually make it any less magical

1300784 2012-09-14 00:37:00 As usual --- with iPoos and things from fruit trees ----- it's about the money.

I've disliked the snobbish attitudes of Apple fanbois from the early - what (?) ---- the 1970s? I wouldn't stop in one of their stores to be urinated on if I was on fire as I'm sure there'd be a charge for the service.
