1300758 2012-09-13 09:39:00 Apple were innovative once or twice in the past but do seem to be slipping back. I'm not and never have been an Apple fan but I can recognise a good product when I see one which the original iPhone was as was the ipod.

Since then their products have been getting less and less innovative with each new one. The competition didn't waste anytime in catching up and in a lot of cases although not all have overtaken Apple who now maintain their market share with a suckered fan base and court casesMy question Gary is what innovation are you looking for. As for my NFC comments, their are only wind ups and it worked, but I wouldn't be surprised if apple tried to use Bluetooth 4 instead

1300760 2012-09-13 10:05:00 NFC is a lot more prevalent in other countries. LG + 2degrees use of NFC payments if advertised as the first NZ NFC payment app in NZ (and as far as I know it really IS the first commercial NFC use in NZ)

Other than that there is almost ZERO use for it. in china I could use my dad's friends NFC enabled S2 (i9100G) to pay for all the buses, subways etc as well as open the gates and lobby doors to out appartment. NFC was used as basic level auth to get into the offices of his workplace (followed by PIN for secure areas). There were a whole tonne of other things to do with it as well like in some shops you could scan and make orders via NFC. Your device would be recognized based on UID and if you went back your purchases were saved for faster checkout and you got discounts. It's just NZ has very little implementation. I believe we can read our EPassports + snapper but that's about it. Would be certainly useful though. If I end up in Uni as Massey in wellington i'll probably get the next Nexus or maybe WP... what ever is nice with NFC to make it easier to grab a bus or buy a snack at one of wellingtons rip off snack shacks :p

People are still getting hyped about QR codes here. It's faster to type m.metlink.com into your browser than open QRDroid, scan and click the link :p but hey this country is slow on the uptake.

EDIT: In response to dave, although I think steve was holding apple back a little with his design ideas and controlling nature I do think he was also holding apple together. This next gen is a MASSIVE departure from what they had before. So it might end in tears for the apple crew. Or a raging success!

Re Plod, passbook isn't compatible with NZ ticketing and booking systems as far as I know and a lot of content is restricted to US/UK

One thing I REALLY hate is the way the bloody iPhone launch was on prime time news.... really who give a flying f... it's a phone! Do we need details on the news? Was the Raspberry Pi on the news here? in fact were ANY tech items in prime news lately? Tomorrow I want to see a 10 min review on ATi's nekk gen of SLi cards on TV1.

1300761 2012-09-13 10:14:00 Yeah I read some article on Cult of Mac, or maybe it was by Mike Elgan, about Bluetooth 4.0 and the iPhone and replacing NFC. Not entirely convinced. Plausible though :)

It's probably one of the *very* few rumours about this mornings launch that didn't actually come true :p

1300763 2012-09-13 10:49:00 About time someone said it like it really is

really who give a flying f... it's a phone! :clap:clap

The majority of people who own what ever phone, doesn't matter if its a Android or some Apple version only use its basic functions. Most never get used.

Watch the video here (tvnz.co.nz) The comment she makes at 40 Seconds is spot on, along with the comments at approx 3.35 :D

The whole interview is basically spot on, to many people think they Have to have the latest i product or they are not "cool" any more -- more like big egos and the need for some sort of flashy device to make then feel better than everyone else.
