1326468 2013-02-14 05:03:00 Do they support VPNs? I'm about to upgrade at home and have been using DDWRT but open to try Gargoyle nmercer (3899)
1326469 2013-02-14 05:12:00 Yes, definitely support VPNs. They support OpenVPN as a client, as well as a server.

Also, unlike the Genius router, Gargoyle actually permits the passthrough of PPTP VPN ;) Yep, that's right, the Genius router will actually *prevent* any type of PPTP VPN from going in or out! Was *pissed* when I discovered that...

What hardware have you been running it on Nathan?

1326470 2013-02-14 07:39:00 Hi Chill,
Beginners luck, somehow I've missed out on the opening screen ie "Do you want to set up a network" I'm on XP and the router seems good, I can bring up the log on page and it will connect to my nexus 7, but no opening screen again. It's probably something simple, I thought to reset it, but thought to get advice first, any help appreciated.

1326472 2013-02-16 21:02:00 I have been following this thread, but don't recognise half the names.I do recognise Orcon, Genius and Teamspeak. So I've decided to stick my nose in.
I've had a Genius router for a couple of months. It is the best Router I have ever had. Absolutely no faults, after I stopped trying to use before Chorus had done it's thing. I also use Teamspeak 3 on a daily basis without any problems. And I have no complaints about Orcon except that some of it's help staff are helpless.

1326473 2013-02-16 23:50:00 How many people are in the room with you in TeamSpeak? We noticed it mostly once you have around 5-8+ people all talking. It's plausible that Orcon are shipping this updated firmware by default on new routers though.

The staff are pretty awful on 1st level, was speaking with their Disputes Resolution guy after I'd lodged a TDR Complaint and he was quite frank about some of the troubles they'd been having with them too. They're working to improve it, which is cool, but I didn't wanna stick around while they did.

Its not a super bad router compared to a lot of others out there, but it still leaves a lot to be desired.

1326474 2013-02-17 03:13:00 I've been using an Asus DSL-N55U since Xmas and it's been rock solid, an expensive router and more than I need but bought out of frustration. I've lost DSL once in that time and it turns out the whole street was down.
I'm starting to think paying more for a model with more features than you need might be a good strategy. The only thing that worries me is how hot it gets, contemplating getting a small laptop cooler and sitting it top of that.
I've had group skype calls while downloading and playing wow - no problems and no change in the in game ping. I have 3 PC's, a tablet, smartphone, TiVo, PS3, Printer, NAS, receiver connected both wired and wirelessly - and it's all flawless.

If this one fails on me I'll definately go the seperate modem / router path and maybe get gargoyle as well. It's bloody annoying how rubbish home routers appear to be in general.
This one has a decent warranty and I purchased it new so I'm hopeful It'll work out.

1326475 2013-02-17 07:11:00 Yeah I've noticed the Asus models get kinda warm, but they're pretty good at coping with it in general though. It's only in sub-par line conditions that they really begin to fall over quickly.

Believe me, I know what you mean about rubbish home routers, I'd easily suggest that 95% of the ones available are sub-par. It's not like it's that hard to make one, and make it decently, surely?!

Well being a bit paranoid(from ignorance) I have been a bit slow to do this, also a heavy workload didn't help. But success, the little choice box(business\home) got lost somewhere, so I found the Gargoyle sites installation page and found it similar to Chills minus the "box", so tried that, but the router didn't recognize the file. Looking at the file it looked to be claimed\Associated by VCL (teach me for not watching the options when installing programs), anyway dissociating looked way too hard so I uninstalled VLC and tried again. Still no luck. Further research said renaming the file "something".bin would work. That proved wrong as the file showed up in gargoyle as xxxxx.bin.bin I resaved the file without an extension and that worked showing up as xxxx.bin in Gargoyle.
Did what I could in the settings, and will finally connect it up tomorrow, once I get those settings from my ISP

1326477 2013-02-25 08:39:00 Connected today, simple if you know how. Nexus connected easily, Opera not so easily had to disable all proxy server settings. It might be my imagination but but the pages seem to flick up quicker with the router in the system. Hope this is helping anyone thinking about about going down the same path, Gargoyle is really pretty easy to use too. PPp (9511)
